what the Clinton/feinswine ban did was (beyond all of the material restrictions)further erode the sovereinty of the individual citizen.It contributed to the sheeple mentality of "Oh that looks like something I saw in a movie-QUICK BAN IT& SAVE US ALL!!"...It continued the expansionist tendencies of the government and the various LEO administrators i.e."were exempt because we're..."you get the idea.
Oh,and it created an entirely new,classification that had nothing to do with the mechanical function and definition of a true"assault weapon".This served to further reduce the choices available for those whoreside in states where they may still exercise their rights as recognized by the Founders and the Bill of Rights.
