Funny you should bring up H. Rider Haggard's She. The prolific Henry Rider Haggard (best known for She and King Solomon's Mines) was a minor British colonial officer in South Africa in his youth and helped preside over the British takeover of the Cape Colony. He disliked the afrikaners (for their cruelty to the africans and general smallmindedness, while respecting their courage), but boy, did he hate the portugese! I know of at least two villains named "Perreira" in his ouvre.
