No, it's not true; he "volunteered" to go into the Navy instead of being drafted into the Army, which he had already tried to delay by one year when he asked his draft board if he could go to France for a year.

He signed up for Swift boats when Swift boats were ONLY doing safe missions off the coast; unfortunately for him, their mission changed as soon as he finished his training.
