Good point. America is not likely to elect a president named Barack Obama.

Not today. But in the future? I said this in another thread but I'll say it again. Tonight's keynote is but Phase I in the long-term plan to neutralize Obama's name issue nationally. I predict he'll be on a Dem national ticket by 2016.

But again, he was pretty far ahead in the polls when we also had a candidate who was young, attractive, and well spoken. There's this underlying assumption that Obama is just another black inner-city socialist candidate who will easily be "ghettoized" into a political stereotype, and whose name will prevent him from ever being trusted by the "mainstream" (whoever that is). Anyone who thinks that is drastically underestimating Obama's appeal, and will be caught with their pants down in a few years when he's a real political force and not just a wunderkind.

Force to be reckoned with? In Illinois, sure. But once he steps outside our bubble, he becomes just another race-baiting class-warrior.

You "misunderestimate" this man at your peril. That's my opinion. It may be years before one of us is proven right, but based on what I see going on, I know where I'm placing my money.

I disagree. He's a real operator.

Obama is an intelligent, well-spoken candidate.

Something tells me the name alone will cause him a lot of grief.

not really... in this day and age, it's what is politically expedient and what will maximize one's wallet.

If the Republican Party was a real, functioning political party, instead of a loose collection of self-aggrandizing individuals, its leaders would have had 2 or 3 candidates lined up to take Ryan's place. There is something deeply wrong with a party that has to go on celebrity hunts to scratch up candidates.

The first black (or woman) president will NOT be a liberal.

I'm sure you'll be proven right. Why would large numbers of people vote for someone whose declared goal is to screw them.

The first black President will probably be Condi. Or, at least that's my hope.

I doubt it. I don't see her as a political animal, in terms of running for office. Close to power, yes, but in an advisory or appointed role.

Has the Illinois Republican Party settled on a candidate? Is there anyone being considered? What's their deadline to nominate someone?

With a name like that he'll surely go far.

Under Clintonians anything is possible. Who would ever think that we'd have a secretary of the Army with the name of Togo?

The fact is, is that the IL Republican party is a joke, just like the NY State and CA GOP are. Surely someone in IL, a businessman in the more conservative southern and western parts of the state can challenge Obama.

Obama is just another socialist disguised as a Clintonian New Democrat.

It would be nice if someone would talk about this guy without saying "articulate" or "well spoken". People say it like its a surprise or something. Its annoying that people feel the need to mention how "articulate" black candidate are.

It's so stupid, too. As if well-spoken black public figures were rare. They're a dime a dozen. (Usually preachers.) Heck, being articulate is standard for a public figure; it's only if someone isn't articulate, that it merits notice.
