Sandy Berger's most likely explanation for 'docs in his socks'
Union Leader ^ | 7/27/04 | Jonah Goldberg

THE INNOCENT explanation is the most likely one, particularly given the facts involved," Bill Clinton said in defense of former National Security Adviser Sandy Berger. Who, you've probably heard, is in some hot water for getting caught illicitly smuggling very classified documents on more than one occasion from the National Archives.

Now, I don't know for sure what to make of Berger's misdeeds, but it's clear that his best defense against criminality is an offense to prove how sloppy and careless he was. He says that in the process of illegally sneaking the notes he made while reviewing classified material, he "inadvertently" stole several classified documents. He's since lost some of them. And the documents were far from random. He took all of the politically sensitive drafts of the after-action study on the Clinton administration's response to the so-called Millennium Terror plot, which went to the heart of the Clinton administrations anti-terror policy.

Unfortunately for Berger, even his A-list spin team — Clinton lawyers Lanny Breuer, Lanny Davis and former White House Press Secretary Joe Lockhart — are having a hard time proving Berger was as dumb as he's claiming. According to various reports, Berger inadvertently took anywhere from four to five drafts of the same report, plus the final copy, over at least two different visits. Some witnesses claim he shoved documents down his pants, in his jacket and — allegedly according to one witness — in his socks. He says he accidentally carried the drafts and final copy away in a leather portfolio. Still, the drafts were somewhere between 15 and 30 pages each, so it's hard to believe he didn't notice swiping 75 to 180 pages.

It's like a 10-year-old telling his parents he knowingly stole $5 worth of candy but in the process he accidentally shoplifted a basketball. And this guy was the national security adviser.

He was always a slob with vital national security documents.

And Clinton lost the nuclear football..... no wonder he's laughing. I have fallen down the rabbit hole, because I see that much of America still loves this lowlife scum.

This nation is in trouble because the mainstream media is a cover. I mean BIG TROUBLE!

This election may be lost because most of our citizens are not getting anywhere near the truth on these important matters.

I feel sorry for young people growing up in this decaying country.

There is NO innocent explanation and everyone who cares already knows it. The only question that remains is exactly what Berger was trying to accomplish. I still don't they we know enough.

The central debate of this election is national security.

I'm sorry, I think right up there as a central issue of this election should be the lack of "integrity" of the mainstream media and its conscious, ruthlessly destructive effect on the American voters' ability to make an informed decision. Sorry to keep saying this, but if someone, even the President himself, doesn't confront and expose all the prevarication by the mainstream media, most of the voters will never know how they are being propagandized and fooled.

The mainstream media (news and entertainment industries) is impossible to avoid, and this election may be stolen this year in a different way than was claimed (incorrectly) in 2000.

How about an insanity defense? As a member of the Clinton administration, Berger is entitled to the presumption of an inability to distinguish right from wrong... the definition of insanity.

Maybe Berger should be put on the witness stand, handed the stack of documents, and demonstrate physically just how he put them in his socks.

Berger is waiting for a pardon from Mr. Kerry.

Bill Clinton thinks its "funny" for Berger to compromise national security. Oh, I guess we already knew that from the secrets sold to China under his watch . . . .

Bergler's best excuse would be that he didn't stuff them in his socks. Instead all those pages were crammed into his cheeks. Notice how Bergler has the most HUMONGOUS cheeks on the planet. In fact I think you can fit the entire national archives there.

Sandy Berger should come out of the closet, take his life in his hands and go before the Senate and tell them everything. Tell them about Clinton, about the failures, about Kerry.

Then he should blow his brains out.

At least he will then be accepted in heaven.

what I thought was interesting in the "spin game" was the comment; "The 911 commission was able to do their work."

This innocent explanation should help the bank robber who says, "I didn't take all the money, the bank was able to stay in business." not likely.

Sequel to Cat in the Hat should be "Docs in Socks" a spy thriller complete with Rhymes--also featuring Alex Baldwin but this time as--Sandy Berger. The contractual concession to Baldwin is he gets to Rhyme in French.

Arrnold--plays Dubbya

Michael Moore will play the laughing-his-head-off-at -security-laspses---Bill Clinton. Stuart Smalley gets a cameo role as the years later--finally autopsied Ron Brown.

Believe me most of the Dems I know will stick their heads in the sand about Berger the Burglar and Wilson the Liar. All those embarrassing (and telling) incidents concerning Dem bigshots will be ignored or glibly explained away by them. Most of my Dem acquaintances only know that, in their words, "the Democrats stand up for the little guy", and that's about they only thing they know. With Dems you're talking about a lot of supremely ignorant people.

Right on. And it's only getting worse. Bush will lose, unless something bizarre happens.
