Turkey hopes for a regional alliance to prevent the emergence of a Kurdish state
Turkeys Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is to visit Iran to suggest the formation of an alliance between Turkey, Iran and Syria to prevent the emergence of an independent Kurdish state.
London (KurdishMedia.com) 26 July 2004: The Prime Minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is due to travel to Iran tomorrow to hold talks with top Iranian officials.
During talks, Erdogan is expected to put across the message: "The partitioning of Iraq will damage us all. We can prevent the emergence of an independent Kurdistan by creating an alliance."
During his visit in Tehran, Erdogan is expected to meet the Iranian President Mohammed Hatemi as well as other top officials, and discuss economic and political issues. However, the issue at the top of the agenda is expected to be the issue of south Kurdistan.
It is reported that the Turkish PM will suggest to Iranian officials an alliance between Turkey, Iran and Syria in order to together prevent the emergence of an independent Kurdish state in south Kurdistan.
Erdogan is also to inform Tehran of his recent meeting with the Syrian Prime Minister El-Naci Otari and their "full agreement" on the issue of acting together to protect Iraqs territorial integrity.
Erdogan is expected to emphasise the point that if Iraqs territorial integrity is not protected then tensions will emerge that will damage all the neighbouring countries.
Furthermore, the Turkish PM is to add the argument that the concerned countries need to develop a common policy in relation to the possibility of the break-up of Iraq.
Erdogan is also to note that Syria is of the same opinion with Turkey on the "threat posed by a Kurdish state" and that this alliance will be greatly strengthened with the support of Iran.
Finally, Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to express his satisfaction over Iranian operations against Kurdistan Peoples Congress (Kongra-Gel) and ask for the organisation to be declared as a "terrorist organisation" and expelled from the region. Iran is expected to respond positively to Turkeys demands.
Turkey is cooked..
I'd rather have an alliance with the Kurds against Iran and Syria. I don't the the Turks would mess with that.
a_turk: How's this playing in Turkey?
Turkey:
Good luck getting spare parts for your US made military hardware.
No better way to draw militant pro-independence emotion out of a Kurd than a plot by the heads of Turkey, Syria, Iran, and presumably Iraq's new central government, to keep the Kurd down.
I also think such a plot, as done in the open as a demonstration of power and will, can and will be effective in squashing any aspirations of an independent Kurdistan.
Here's hoping for a confederated government to emerge in Iraq, allowing the Kurds greatest possible autonomy.
And this piece of journalism is compliments of which group?
Yes, Turkey is coordinating Iraq's neighbors with whom she shares borders to enhance border security and ensure Iraq's territorial integrity.
Alliance? Ridiculous. You have been had. Naive bunch.. You deserve Kerry..
