In case you're wondering how the Rick Perlstein battle royale turned out, it didn't. Perlstein left a comment here on Friday night promising to return in the morning and dispense some leftist wisdom. Never happened. Wind Rider e-mailed him and asked when and whether he's willing to resume the debate, and received this response (emphasis mine):
"I'm busy making a living. When I get back from the Democratic convention in Boston, I'll respond. Meanwhile join me at FreeRepublic.com on August 3, where I've arranged to take on all comers in a thread, kung-fu style.Looking forward to it.
Regards,
Rick Perlstein
Why would Perlstein take his game to the Freepers? For only two reasons I can think of. One: He genuinely is interested in an honest debate and wants to give the widest possible audience of right-wingers a chance to participate. Or two: He wants to bait a few wingnuts and cherry-pick their quotes afterwards to prove how extreme we all are, and Free Republic can serve him better in that regard than any blog can. I know which way I'm betting.

It would be a bad idea to engage him and give him material for an article.
Yup. Don't insult his father. The patsy cannot handle that.
Low on material?
Yes, that's a joke.
Yo
Hell...even I kicked his ass (verbally) a few months ago.
He's a girlie-man with weak, weak arguments.
He'll be run out with his tail between his legs.
Never heard of the clymer.
Poster name of Perlstein. Many foolish articles posted here. He's a mook. See that he is a lurker as I am posting to him as well.
He doesn't have the balls to post his own articles but has a third party post them.
Wing nuts? Us? Nah...
AHEM!
What if he was allowed to post his thread and NOBODY replied. That would be funny.
Let's give him a warm welcome. We'll put out some nice bowls of pretzels, mixed nuts and a selection of soda and mixers...
He'll be disappointed at not getting Kool-Aid, I know, but he can head to DU for that...
Hahaha...C'mon wit'da c'mon!
THERE IS NO FEAR IN THIS DOJO!
I've been Freep mailing back and forth with Rick Perlstein, concerning an August 3rd battle royale on Free Republic concerning his liberal positions and articles.
I do not personally know Perlstein, but I generally post Village Voice articles on Tuesday afternoons. He signed up to respond to one of his articles that I posted. Since then, I have become his semi-official Freeper liason.
I could be wrong, but from what I've read from Perlstein (including his excellent book on Barry Goldwater), he seems to be an unabashed liberal, but the rare one who actually feels comfortable with his liberal positions and believes he can defend them in debates with conservatives.
I am planning to post a thread a few days before the event, linking to all the articles that I can find on FR that were written by him. Everybody who is interested can get themselves ready by familiarizing themselves with his articles and FR responses.
To be honest, there are some of his articles, like this one that I can't wait to see him try to defend. I don't see how it can be done, but he's willing to step into the fray and try.
I am fully aware that he may just be trolling for quotes that he can take out of context for a future article. To me, that's part of the fun. The entire debate will be forever preserved here on FR, so we can analyze any distortions or omissions that we find glaring.
On August 3rd, I was planning on posting the debate thread, with Perlstein getting the first word, explaining exactly why he wants to debate a few hundred Freepers simultaneously.
I think it will be a fun time, and those who don't want to participate are free to abstain.
His technique is no good.
Please let me know if you have any objections.
I hope you don't, and I really hope you would participate along with the rest of us.
You're very welcome, dead. After the last spew of his that was posted about two days ago, I thought sheesh! What a numbnuts.
Looking forward to the August 3 posting.
