Missing Woman Said Sobbing After Call

SALT LAKE CITY July 26, 2004 — Three days before her husband reported her missing, Lori Hacking took a phone call at work that left her stunned and sobbing, her colleagues at a brokerage house told The Associated Press.

Several colleagues said that Hacking had been arranging for on-campus housing at the University of North Carolina medical school and that they believe the school was returning a call to say her husband, Mark Hacking, was not enrolled there, as he had told her.

Lori Hacking left work early after receiving the call the afternoon of Friday, July 16. Mark Hacking reported his wife's disappearance the following Monday. She is now feared dead, and her husband has become the focus of the police investigation.

At the time of her disappearance, the couple were packing to move to North Carolina within weeks. But after she vanished, police and family members learned that in addition to lying about being accepted to medical school, Mark Hacking had not even graduated from college.

Mark Hacking, a 28-year-old nightshift hospital orderly, has been at a psychiatric hospital since police found him running around naked in sandals the night after the search for his wife began.

Lori Hacking, a 27-year-old trading assistant who just learned she was five weeks pregnant, was a private woman who did not share personal troubles, making her breakdown in the office all the more unusual, said colleagues at Wells Fargo Securities Services.

"She was visibly upset. She started to cry and got up to walk away," her supervisor, Randy Church, told the AP on Monday. He said that when co-workers asked her what was wrong, she replied, "It's no big deal; I'm OK. But I think I will go home."

Lori Hacking's co-workers gave accounts of the phone call to homicide detectives after she was reported missing. Officials at the University of North Carolina were trying to determine whether one of their administrators made the call.

"We wouldn't have any reason to doubt" the Wells Fargo employee accounts, Detective Dwayne Baird said Monday. He would not comment further.

Church said detectives showed up the day after Hacking's disappearance and inspected her e-mail and computer files.

Lori Hacking's mother, Thelma Soares, was unaware her daughter had received the upsetting phone call, but did not get a chance to speak to her the weekend before she vanished, family spokesman Scott Dunaway said.

Results on some of the evidence collected by police, including a mattress recovered from a trash bin and a box spring taken from the couple's apartment, could come back from a laboratory this week.

Brandon Hodge, another trading assistant, said that at about 10 a.m. on Monday, July 19, Mark Hacking placed a call to his wife's office, speaking first to Hodge.

"By the way, how is Lori?" Hodge quoted Hacking as asking. Hodge said he replied, "Well, she's not made it into work yet."

Church, who had been expecting Lori Hacking at 7 a.m. and says she was never late to work, then took the phone. He recalled Mark Hacking saying his wife had not returned from a sunrise jog at Memory Grove, a downtown park near the office. Hacking made it seem as if he was calling from his apartment, Church said.

"Oh, my God, her (work) clothes are still here," Hacking reportedly said to Church.

"I said, `You need to call police immediately. Just get off the phone,'" Church said.

But Hacking did not immediately call police, and police say he was at a store buying a new mattress shortly before reporting his wife missing.

Three of her co-workers who spoke to the AP said they showed up at Memory Grove before Mark Hacking joined them. When he arrived in his Dodge Durango, they told him his wife already had been reported missing. He then placed a call of his own to police dispatchers.

Hacking began an aimless search, walking and pondering before taking off on his own and abandoning Lori's co-workers. But first, he sat in his sport utility vehicle with an address book on his lap, making calls, apparently to relatives.

I think you need to work on your reading comprehension. I didn't say God told her anything. What I said was that as an active Mormon, she would have sought and THOUGHT she received divine confirmation before marrying this guy. Thinking God is telling you something and God actually telling you something are very different things. The WTC attackers were sure God wanted them to fly planes into the towers, yet I'm quite certain that God told them nothing of the sort.

"She would have been better off going to his parents and asking them how best to approach this with her husband. (That way she could get their input, and show that she didn't want to belittle him. She just might be alive if she had somehow involved his family.)"

Often the worst thing to do is to involve one's relatives in arguments between husband and wife...at least in a healthy marriage (which this one apparently wasn't) you solve your problems yourselves without bringing in Mama and Daddy (who may maintain hostile feelings for the child-in-law after the spouse gets over it). So the question is, did Lori realize, beyond her husband's lies at this time, just how unhealthy her husband was? Obviously these were huge whoppers, but was this completely out of the blue, or did he have a history she was aware of should have tipped her off she needed help from some source in dealing with him?

Both were overweight and had beer bellies when the TV cameras first focused on them. Spoiled, overfed, egotistical ba$tards.

Marie Osmond's first husband was gay. I believe that was the reason for the divorce. Marie wanted children.

Oh, my comment was directed to the poster who seemed to be blaming the victim.

Whatever she was aware of, or had a denial of, it isn't her fault she was murdered.

What wife wouldn't confront her husband if she just discovered they weren't on the housing list, when she thought they were?

My attempt at a joke came off flat. From listening to the younger folks in the house talk to others about their love interests, the first thing I hear is; "Is he cute"? Never anything about character.

Maybe this was an arranged marriage. Lori, being a sweet and obedient girl, would never go against her parents' wishes.

The owners of Bradley's Furniture, Etc. told The Salt Lake Tribune on Thursday that Mark Hacking came into their South Salt Lake store at about 9:45 Monday morning shopping for a mattress.

And why would somebody allegedly planning on making a move to another state buy a mattress? If you need a mattress, buy it at your destination, and leave the old one behind, rather than having one more thing to stuff into the moving van.

"....has been at a psychiatric hospital since police found him running around naked in sandals the night after the search for his wife began."

Since he has worked in a funny ward the last few years, I think this is all staged to keep the detectives at bay. He knows they cannot interrogate a person showing signs of delusional behavior. What is most telling to me isn't that he is naked. What is most telling is that he WAS NOT barefoot. He gave it away when he kept his sandals on because his feet were too tender to "run around the parking lot", and who knows what he might step on in an open parking lot?
This is the most telling to me that he is faking the bizarre behavior. I really feel sorry for these 2 families who had faith in him and are now seeing their worlds fall apart.

That is a really interesting point. He's seen enough delusional behavior up close to be able to try to imitate it as a cover.

For the same reason he left the first store and went to the second store to make his purchase. He wanted to be able to use it that night.

In a new town, they might not know just when they would arrive or where to shop for the best buy.

The thing I found curious was why did he have to take it with him, instead of delivered? This was early in the morning so I guess the store might have only one delivery day and that must have been later in the week, and he needed that mattress that night for sleeping, because he ruined the other one.

This makes me wonder if he killed her while she was sleeping.

So, it's her fault she got killed.

You obviously haven't read many of my posts on this. Nope, not her fault. Just suggesting that sometimes one is better off letting others know what is going on, for self preservation. jmo

Who was she going to get quick help from? Sometimes families are the ones you have to turn to. Especially when the situation is serious, like moving to the other side of the country, based on lies.

Isn't it strange when you think of Lori and Laci ? They both kept their mouths shut !

We know that Laci KNEW of Janet, Snot's college girlfriend who found Laci and Snot having sex. So right from the start, Laci knew of at least one discretion on his part. She kept quiet, as far as we know. Everyone in the beginning that was interviewed said that "THEY" were the "PERFECT" couple. He loved her so much, they were soooo in loooove. Right ?

Now, Lori...."They were soooo in looooove ! " " They were the perfect couple"...and she said NOTHING to anyone !

I thought I knew alot about this so far, but one thing puzzles me....Did Mark work? If he was going to school..did he have at least a part time job? What did he do ? How did they live on her Bank paycheck? How could he fake going to school ? How could she not know something was wrong? That just seems odd to me.

It shows you how some women, because of some need to be loved, will believe anything because they need to be loved. They will not speak for themselves but suffer and try with all they have to forgive and to believe in them. That had to be it.

I find it very odd that both these women were so needy, and can hardly believe that they didn't know something was wrong. But to say nothing to anyone tells alot. They were both being abused all the time, but the scars were on the inside.

I bet there is someone reading this that knows exactly what I am saying.

I aggree to a large degree with you. Neither of them confided with friends or families their true concerns or thoughts. THAT is the problem. Whether one tells parents or friends, there ARE times when you need an unbiased outside opinion of situations, an objective point of view.

Just like the abused women that think their husbands will change, they keep making excuses to forgive them. It isn't good to keep things bottled up. It wasn't good for him and it wasn't good for her.

I'm LDS and I'll tell you one thing. My husband lays a hand on me in anger and he's gone. I'll forgive him once, it happens again, and we're done. The LDS church does NOT condone staying with abusive spouses.

That said, there is a lot of pressure to make one's marriage work, especially if it is a temple marriage. I know several people who have stayed married in spite of the bad times, but none of the problems involved abuse, either physical or sexual. Most managed to work through the problems and are now happily married. Others got out, and I can't blame them at all.

Given that Lori was an active Mormon, I'm sure she asked God to confirm that Mark was the right spouse for her, and was sure she got an affirmative answer. It's not a reliable method. Even the LDS Church warns young adults to be on guard for "hormonal revelations". Unfortunately, young adult hormones being what they are, that's about the only kind of revelation most of them will get. God provided humans with brains, and might reasonably expect them to use said brains.

I was taught to run the other way, fast if some guy came up to me and said that he had a revelation that I was to be his wife.

Marie Osmond's first husband was a world class womanizer. She got pregnant shortly after they married. He never quit playing around.

I have a friend who does forensic examinations for the state of Utah. She examines those who are mentally ill to determine if they are mentally ill or are well enough to go on trial for whatever crime(s) they've committed.

After the Andrea Yates tragedy, I asked her how hard it is to fake mental illness. She said under supervision (which all mentally ill defendants are, very well supervised), 3-4 months max. The only ones who hold out longer are meth heads, they last 6-8 months. They might get away with it for awhile, but not forever.
