BOSTON - A conservative anti-tax group unveiled a $1 million advertising campaign Monday that paints Democrat John Kerry (news - web sites) as a waffler, picking up where President Bush (news - web sites) left off last week when his campaign pulled down its ads.
The Club for Growth's launch is much smaller than what Bush had been spending. However, the group's ads will give Republicans somewhat of a presence on the air in certain areas during a week in which Kerry news dominates the airwaves.
Bush's campaign went dark this week, with the campaign opting to save money for an expected multimillion-dollar advertising offensive in August.
The Club for Growth's new 30-second ad is to start running this week in pricey Boston, where Democrats are holding their national convention, before expanding to several Midwestern states.
The ad shows Kerry's head, torso and arm as a spinning weather vane to claim that the Democrat makes decisions depending on which way the wind blows.
"In 1996 he opposed the death penalty for terrorists. Now he claims to support it," the ad says. "Sometimes he's for welfare reform, sometimes he's against it. For a 50-cent gas tax hike, then maybe not. Kerry voted for higher taxes 350 times, but now says he'd cut taxes."
The script largely echoes assertions the Bush campaign has made in its own anti-Kerry ads, including some that have been criticized by independent fact checkers as questionable.
Chad Clanton, a Kerry spokesman, said the ad simply repeats misstatements the Bush campaign has made about Kerry's record.
"Bush and (Vice President Dick) Cheney need to make up their minds about whether they'll ever stop trying to mislead the American people," Clanton said. "Like sands through the hourglass, their time and their credibility is running out."

Now watch MoveOn try to sic the FEC on this group under CFR laws. Oh, the hypocrisy!
That photo is too Botoxian.
Colagen injections, it would seem.
Check out the rest of the site as well. Lots of good stuff there.

Most of the people in New Hampshire are from Taxachusetts. Evading exhorbitant taxes.
OK a slight exageration! LOL
Good point however.
Thanks for the link!
Great ad :-)
Someone should tell "Hanging" Chad that it is wone thing to say that they are "repeating misstatements," but quite another thing to PROVE it. That is one thing the KerryKlones do little of: disproving "misstatements" with real facts. Because they can't. You don't see them countering any of the Swiftvets for Truth, now do you?
That face looks like ten miles of bad road.
A friend of mine went to see Fahrenheit 9/11 and was overwhelmed by its effectiveness to illustrate that Bush is a bad president. What the Republicans need is a slick produced movie to counter that!
They need to run adds with testimony by the Swiftboat Vets against Kerry. I would donate ca$h for that. I would love to see his fomer swiftboat Commanding Officer (the 1st one) talking about how Kerry wash fishing for purple hearts from day one and how he was rejected and improperly went to the next CO to get the purple heart.
It sounds like they just may be trying to aggravate the Dems for jollies...somewhat humorous, but a waste of funds. The money would be better spent in, oh, say, the Philadelphia and Cincinnati TV markets.
