7/25/04 NY Times Editoral quotes in promotion of their ideology that "40 million people in Iraq are between the ages of 18 and 30."
TOPICS: Miscellaneous; News/Current Events
KEYWORDS: ignorantmedia; misformation; nytimes; unprofessionalism
It seems that unbeknownst to the general public, Punch, Pinch and Partners have re-hired Jayson Blair as a fact checker for their editorials. In the Sunday (7/25/04) lead editorial, the Times boldly asserted that there 'are more than 40 million people [in Iraq] between the ages of 18 & 30. This is no mean feat since a quick review of the CIA fact book reveals that in 2003 there were only about 24 million people altogether - even if the Times had included all the people in that age group that were slaughtered by Saddam and his fun-loving kids, it would not be near the representation of the Times. Glad to see that the Times holds no grudges with Jayson.

You might want to read the article again. The 40 million people is referring to the population of that age group in the United States, not Iraq.

Save quotation marks for direct quotations. Nowhere in that article does it say 40 million Iraqis are between the ages of 18 and 30. It does, however, say that America has that population. And maybe you should get your facts straight on Jayson Blair, too. He wasn't hired as a fact-checker by anyone.
