I wonder if it would help if Taiwan adopted a Swiss concept of defense -- home ownership of assault rifles, universal male service etc. Or do they have that already?

Taiwan is extremely anti-private gun ownership. EXTREMELY ANTI.

Quite honestly, even though I am an NRA Life member since the age of 12, a GOA member and very pro-2nd amendment, I am somewhat in agreement with this here.
Gun use and ownership is such an alien concept to the Taiwanese populace that I personally think that a blanket policy of allowing private firearm ownership would literally result in a bloodbath by way of personal, familial and traffic disputes. The Taiwanese Police Force is not very effective, politically motivated and held in less than high regard by the average person here.

Hell...this country doea not even have 'Stop signs." Stop light yes, however they are treated with almost universal scepticism and obeyed only when convienient.
