Iraqi army largely built from scratch

It's noon in farm country along the Tigris River, and a squad of soldiers in desert camouflage walks through a cluster of homes.

A dog barks, bares its teeth and growls. People come out in the searing heat to see what's going on. Some stare at the soldiers. Some smile. Two men come up to greet the squad leader, and give him a kiss on each cheek, Iraqi style.

They greet each other with "Salaam aleikum," which means "peace be with you." One of the residents chases the dog away, and the men continue their march, weapons at the ready.

The soldiers are getting this reception here because they are not Americans. They're Iraqis.

Good post bump. Also, in regards to that John Kerry ad directly to the right of it:

No thanks, I’m voting Bush for a stronger America. Who’d want to vote for a guy who ignores intelligence briefings until pressured to do so. Especially when we’re in the middle of a war on three fronts.
