The director (Demme?) got on his rant about cooperate greed and profiting from the war blah blah... hmm...seems to me good ole Michael Moore has made more money than anyone exploiting the war!!! But of course that thought doesn't occur to these nut jobs.
So, he lives in America and couldn't see the flim-flam, er, film? Does he live in a hole? I bet Moore will send him a personal copy.
From his biography, he did work hard at a variety of jobs from an early age. He also attended boarding school and graduated from a university. He was considering becoming a doctor. His father was a minister and his mother a beautician. The only ex-anything he is is ex-middle class.
He ain't no slave, Hell he wasn't even in the movie "Roots" LOL
I'm an ex-slave too. I am certain that if I go back far enough there is some anscestor of mine that was enslaved. You all need to pay me reparations now! You should all feel terrible...yes, I know you didn't do it personally but your anscestors did it...or at least some of the ascestors of some of you did it to me...or to my ascestors...or to at least one of my anscestors. You bastards! Give me money!
I don't see where his saying that he's an ex-slave gives any insight to his political leanings. Denzel Washington is a terrifically talented actor, handsome as all get out, and apparently a good father and husband. At least he isn't going around the country yelling and spewing his beliefs and had to be pushed by Khatey Al-Khourek into saying even this much.
I can understand people not wanting reparations for slavery, but I can't fathom why they want to change history and ignore the fact that slavery DID exist in these United States. It does happen to be a huge negative blot on our freedom timeline. If you pretend it didn't happen, you can't very well deal with its societal consequences today.
I don't understand the quote out of context, but it doesn't sound that bad to me.
I may be completely off base here, but I can't help wonder what denzel has done to help HIS people.
from slave to rich actor that guy is really doing well for himself isn't he
Before you get worked up over Denzel Washington, I happened on that interview when Meryly Streep was ranting about Bush and his reliance on Jesus as a Christian.
She started in about how Jesus was a pacifist and would have turned the other cheek after 911. Denzel stopped her cold by reminding her that Jesus got pretty violent with the moneylenders in the temple. "You've gotta read the whole Bible verses", he said.
You could look at his clenched jaws and tell she had pissed him off.
Don't know his politics, but do know that he is a devout Christian, raised in and still attending a Pentecostal church. I read an interview where he listed his priorities in life as
God, family, work, football
Seems pretty centered to me!
Give Denzel some Kudos! he was awesome on Dateline and put Katie and Meryl Streep in there place. I hope someone can post the transcript from tonight!
Denzel is pretty but dumb.
good ranting article...Denzel annoys me. He whined about the Oscar statue not looking like 'folks like him' blah blah blah and just a lot of other prejudiced things he's said. Plus, he's got such a snotty attitude. Why couldn't Sidney Poitier win an Oscar instead of this loser?
Whew, this is one confusing thread - my head hurts. I still have no idea what the hell Denzel meant.
All our ancestors were slaves at one point or another. And I don't mean in the figurative sense as Mr. Washington does.
An ex-slave paid handsomely to play "pretend".
In the context of the few sentences that are written, it is difficult for me to put too much stock in the "slave" reference when he prefaces it by saying that he DID NOT see F9/11. I'm not sure what has everyone so upset. If he said he was the descendant of slaves (rather than an "ex-slave"), would that make everyone feel better? If he said it that way, I would interpret it to mean he has risen above slavery and is beyond having to be told what to think a la F9/11.
Am I a hillbilly or simply descended from them? Is someone going to get on me because I say one and not the other?
Nothing DW said in this short excerpt gives this conservative any problems at all. To tell the truth, it sounds like piling on the black guy for no particular reason.
Another example of the wonder that is the United States of America. Look at the success that can be acheived by an ex-slave. (Of course I know he wasn't REALLY a slave, but the race pimps have created a slave class out of whole cloth, and it is amazing whenever someone breaks out of it to achieve success.)
Rather than focusing on whether he really is an ex-slave or not, we should be pointing others to his success. The more people who rise above the race hustlers, the better for all of us, because many of them will become conservatives. Really.
