Katie Couric asked Denzel Washington if he likes to keep his politics private, He said he's not one of those people. He does speak his mind.
Couric asked Denzel, Did you see Moores movie 9-11?
Denzel, "I didn't see it, I live in America, I grew up here, I'm an ex-slave"
Whaaaaa?! Really?! Denzel, do you even know what a slave is? Have you ever worked on a plantation, prepared meals for an entire household? Driven Miss Daisy? Ugh another dillentante entertainer posturing as a martyr to the masses who puts his silver foot in his obnoxioulsy opinionated mouth. He wouldn't even allow Meryl Streep to get her opinion in edge wise.
Mr.Denzel, YOU are nothing but an obnoxiously opinionated MALE CHAUVINISTIC PIG. How many women have you punked on the sly behind your wifes back? About the closet you probably ever came to being a slave was being asked to take out the kitchen trash by your own mother and I'm certain you did that with bitter contempt too. Lose the huge chip on your shoulder Denzel. Nobody likes a wealthy pouter. And YOU are a Hollywood person wether YOU like it or not. Yes YOU too are subject to labels. Slave my hiney. Indeed, your remark is a disgrace to every slave in the history of the world. Slaves still exist today in Africa held captive by other Africans. Get over yourself Denzel.

I have a question for Meryl Streep regarding her reference from the bible and what Bush should have done, "Turn the other cheek"
So Ms. Streep, should the world turn their other cheek against the atrocities against humanity when,
women and little girls (pregnant ones too) the world over are raped, their genitalia mutilated(Sierra Leon(sp?)), murdered, endentured slaves? Should the 9-11 victims families with fatherless children turn the other cheek? Should the Jews in concentration camps during WWII turned the other cheek? I bet you'd fight for them. Should Lacy Petersons family turn the other cheek. I bet if your daughter(if you have one) was raped and murdered you wouldn't turn the other cheek. You didn't turn "YOUR" cheek regarding apple pesticide alar! Hrmmmm. You and your Follywood ilk DO NOT speak for me or the rest of the USA. WE did NOT elect YOU and your ilk to represent us in the USA or while you are in foreign countries. Do not speak on our behalf. Speak only for YOURSELF. You are not the collective "we".
The earliest blacks came as indentured servants who became free when they'd worked out their contracts, as did white indentured servants. Some were from Dutch slaveships but became indentured when they came ashore, since slavery was not supported by law. That unfortunately came later. They were not afforded the same rights but some did prosper and were able to afford their own indentured servants. The prosperous blacks were more likely to remain free, and I've read about one who won a lawsuit about a black slave of his who had been stolen by a white man.
When the supply of indentured servants became low, slavery became codified into law and children of slaves were automatically slaves. In Virginia the status of the mother determined the child's status for a time and there are instances of slaves and indentures producing indentured children who worked their 31 years and then were free.
Some, like the founder of Chicago, Du Sable, were of French and African (slave) blood, but they came to N. America as freemen. He was one of the black French fur-tappers I'd heard about some time ago.
Not all blacks at the time of the Civil War were slaves.
Interestingly, the word "slave" comes from Slavic people being a large group subjected to ownership by other Europeans. It's very possible that quite a lot of us have some form of slavery in our ancestorship, no matter what color we are.

As for Denzel's comments, I take them to mean the same thing John Kerry said about F911: "I didn't have to watch it. I lived it."
I don't know what exactly Denzel meant by the ex-slave comment but I don't think he is one of those hollywood leftwing nutjobs because of the following:
1) He didn't see the movie F-11. If he were a lefty he would want to support it and be there the day it opens.
2) During Michael Moore's Oscar speech and tirade against President Bush, the camera was on Denzel and he didn't look too pleased nor did he applaud.
3) Denzel has done plenty of pro-military movies (Antionne Fisher, Crimson Tide, The movie with Meg Ryan)
Denzel may have meant that war freed the slaves and now I am an ex-slave because sometimes war is necessary. At least that's what I hope he meant.

Those were my thoughts too - a dig at Moore AND Kerry.
I'm sorry if I didn't make my thoughts clear. I thought it was nothing but a dig at George Bush and current US policy, and perhaps America in general, along the lines of, "I didn't have to see a movie to tell me how bad things are in America. I was born here. I live here. I am an ex-slave." In other words, I'm not going to be singing the praises of Denzel Washington until I'm convinced he meant the exact opposite.
I see your point. I did a google search an came up with the following. It doesn't help AT ALL in seeing which way Washington leans (does it really matter), but thought it was interesting and a reminder of Moore's delusional ideas. This is from the Emmy awards when Moore got booed:
After thanking the film's producers, Moore launched into a blistering attack on both the war and President Bush, calling him a " fictitious president" who won with "fictitious election results."
"I've invited my fellow documentary nominees on the stage with us," began Moore. "They are here in solidarity with me because we like non-fiction. We like non-fiction and we live in fictitious times."
"We live in a time where we have fictitious election results that elect a fictitious president. We live in a time where we have a man sending us to war for fictitious reasons."
His speech was met with a fair amount of booing and hissing but undaunted, Moore continued, "Whether it's the fiction of duct tape or the fiction of orange alerts, we are against this war Mr. Bush. Shame on you! Shame on you! And any time you've got the pulpit--"
At this point, his time at the podium was brought to a close by the rising strains of the orchestra thought he tried to get in a few last words.
During his speech, the cameras cut to Adrien Brody, Martin Scorsese and Lou Gosset Jr., all of whose reaction was inscrutable. This was followed by a shot of a row with a smiling Harrison Ford and his grim-looking date, Calista Flockhart. A few seats down, Denzel Washington looked serious but his reaction to Moore's speech was difficult to discern.
Following Moore's speech, presenter Steve Martin joked, "The teamsters are helping Michael Moore into the trunk of his limo."
Perhaps his 'ex-slave' comment is more along the lines of being an ex-democrat.

I wish someone would have the balls to say that any black- or any other race for that matter, that relies on Democrats and the government for help, are STILL slaves- slaves to the system.

Assuming that's an accurate quote, what would being an 'ex-slave' have to do with whether or not you watched Michael Moore's film, 'Fahrenheit 9/11'? And how exactly could a black person who was born and raised in the United States of America be alive today and have experienced slavery?
So many of these rich, coddled, fawned-over stars believe that whatever comes out of their mouths is gold.
With each new day, I add new names to my list of things to boycott.
These people make me sick. Halle Berry's "performance" at the Oscars year before last completely negated anything she ever did, in my opinion. I don't want to see anything she's in. Denzel just joined that club too.
Are you people crazy, I'm going to take the time to stand up for Denzel. Not only did he publicly insult Michael Moore by saying he didn't see it he's an American, but he also stood up to Meryl Streep and her barrage of ignorance. You people are bashing an actor standing up against the hollywood communists, do you people realize what you're doing. Denzel Washington should be commended not broken down like this.
Be that as it may, ludicrous comments like "I am an ex-slave," don't exactly give him a credibility boost.
