To add to your comment, the fleet of 747's were not grounded, just additional checks were implemented on the 300, 600, 900 hour checks. The over haul after 1200 hours did not include the bundle checks or removeal of bundles.
Fuel gauges and fire sensor lines are sensitive coax cables and you can't bend them.

I had heard that the fleet had been grounded, but I bow to your greater knowledge. And I also tend to agree with the missile theory you posted. The eye witness reports, the damage to the aircraft, as well as the actions of the investigators in restricting information tend to support that theory and a cover up. BTW, was the recovered wreckage of Flt. 800 destroyed? If so, was it done in a timely manner or was it rushed?

You're right. After the Flt. 800 investigation, it wasn't the 747 that was grounded, but rather 179 older 737s that used the same wiring design as used on older 747s. Newer aircraft don't use that design.
