Edwards says he and Kerry will bring real values to White House
By CHAKA FERGUSON Associated Press Writer
NEW YORK - Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards said Wednesday that if elected, he and ticket-mate John Kerry would bring real American values back to the White House.
"Our campaign is going to be a celebration of real American values," Edwards told a crowd of around 150 who paid $1,000 each to hear him speak at a fund-raiser in a Manhattan hotel.
Edwards said the Bush administration has little idea of what the American people really value.
"They like to use that term `values,'" Edwards said of the Bush campaign. "We don't judge somebody's values based on how they use that word in a political ad. We don't have to guess or look at a poll or focus group to tell what's going on in people's lives. We have been in the real world _ on Main Street _ listening to what people's problems are."
Edwards said his upbringing as the child of a mill worker helped him understand what working-class Americans go through.
The issue of values has become a focal point for both campaigns as they have tried to portray themselves as more in step with what the American public finds important.
The Bush campaign has dismissed Kerry and Edwards as being out of touch, embracing the values of Hollywood and New York celebrities. Edwards said Wednesday that President Bush talks about values but then undercuts what's important to working-class Americans by giving large tax breaks to the wealthy.
Edwards also said that Bush's go-it-alone approach to the war in Iraq had placed an undue burden on the working class, who make up a large part of the armed forces.
"Don't we deserve a commander in chief who will lead the world, not bully it?" Edwards said. "We will also make sure that we have a strong military and strong alliances around the world ... so that no young American man or woman ever goes to war needlessly because America has decided to go it alone."
Later, Edwards attended a $50-a-person fund-raiser at a hip Manhattan nightclub in a bid to reach younger voters.
your senator speaks
Real values? Like their MILLION$?????
Would that be the "real values" of Joe Wilson and Sandy Berger? (laughing)
He must mean bring back the True values that we all know and love from the Clintonian years.
Dear John,
Ixnay on working class childhood stuff.
Regards, John Kerry
"Real values" in the same way the Clinton administration was supposed to be "the most ethical administration in history," right?
They've got some nerve even using terms like "values". Yeesh...
Edwards: The poster boy for tort reform.
This values thing is so freaking trendy. How about principles, ethics, and morals. Let's talk about believing life starts at conception but voting to allow abortion. Let's talk about accusing Vietnam Veterans of being war criminals. Let's talk about getting other poor sap Vietnam Veterans to throw their medals over the fence while we just throw our ribbons (whatever that means). The list is endless.
FMCDH(BITS)
He must mean real values like Wal-Mart means real values, i.e. low price, low quality imported items.
Here's to the celebration of kerry's and edwards' values.
Well, Blaine Edwards and Antoine Kerryweather are off to a great start, with Handy Burglar.
I've been working class all my life, and never thought much about "what working people go through", wonder what Baby face John means by that?
Edwards makes it sound like we live lives of living hell-O-o-o-o-o-hoooooooo, blues, despair and agony on me.
Maybe that's how Punk boy remembers it now, looking down from his Ivory Tower, if so, he is totally out of touch with reality.
Ya sure this sounds like that old saw were going to be the most ethical administration in history does it not?
I think just the fact that these two are running round shouting this at the top of thier lungs means it will be even more corrupt than the clintoons ever dreamed of.
Well, you must remember how Farrah lives.
Funny how this AP news item sounds like a campaign ad for Kerry-Edwards, ain't it?
Heard a good one on the way home this evening on the radio...Announcer said on opening night of the convention the democrats were going to have Carter give a speech on morality, ethics, and values.....
Then they were going to have Clinton give the rebuttal.
