BACKSTORY: Sandy (pantload) Berger (go-to guy for McGovern, Dukakis, Clinton, Kerry)
SPECIAL TO FR | 7/20/04

Posted on 07/20/2004 11:55:56 AM PDT by Liz

When nabbed stuffing top-secret material down his pants and socks to spirit them out of the National Archives, Berger was in the process of testifying before the 911 Commission about the extent of his and the Clinton administration's efforts (or lack thereof) to brief the incoming Bush administration about security issues which led to the 9/11 WTC and Pentagon bombings.

Samuel R. "Sandy" Berger was National Security Advisor to President Clinton beginning December 6, 1996. Berger was born on October 28, 1945 in Brooklyn, New York. His father eager to leave the city moved the family to Millerton, New York.

Berger graduated from Cornell University and Harvard Law School. After law school, he became speechwriter for George McGovern’s 1972 presidential campaign where he met the future President Bill Clinton.

When Jimmy Carter won the Presidency in 1976 Berger served as deputy director of policy planning at the State Department under Anthony Lake the man he would replace as national security advisor.

Then, Berger worked in the foreign policy section of Michael Dukakis’ 1988 presidential campaign where his boss at that job was Madeline Albright. Albright would later be appointed secretary of state at the same time Berger would be appointed national security advisor.

Berger was a partner for the Washington law firm of Hogan and Hartson from 1981-1992. Berger and his wife Susan have three children, Deborah, Sarah and Alexander.

The goals and purpose of the national security team which Berger is a part of, is to address both long and short term global policy making and keep the president up to date on all issues involving world problems. Berger said in an early interview, "I think what I have learned is that our job here is to both try to make sure that the President gets the best, sharpest information possible so he can make well informed decisions." Berger’s job more specifically is to be an essential foreign policy guide and traffic cop for the president, coordinating communication between the Oval Office and Cabinet members. Another aspect of his job is to inform the American people what the objectives of the White House are as far as foreign policy goes, especially in the Middle East." I think that American foreign policy has to make sense to the American people, and I think that means it has to be communicated to them well," says Berger.

Berger as a very close friend of President Clinton was often asked to do more than most National Security Advisors of the past. For instance, his office approached then-CNN Washington bureau chief Frank Sesno to arrange the time and location of a "town meeting."

Berger has no enemies in his position except certain members of the Republican party that do not agree with anything about a Clinton-run White House.

Berger is quick witted, blunt, and hard hitting when it comes to defending his views, yet he never hits below the belt. He has been criticized by some for being too passive which nevertheless mirrors Berger’s personality and politics: studied centrism, between aggression and indifference. " I’ve always said containment is aesthetically displeasing but strategically sufficient," erger stated. "You wake up in the morning and [Saddam Hussein] is still there and it would be far preferable than if he weren’t. As for getting Saddam.’ Most Americans would recognize that option would be emotionally gratifying, but the costs of it would be greater than our national interest."

I was wondering what his relationship to Lake was--very interesting.

This thread has the Kerry anti-terrorism position that someone took off his web site "after" the Berger Boy's pantload made headlines. Pass it along.

I just love it when they find a guy who has worked with McGovern, Carter, Clinton and Kerry and then determine that he is a "Centrist".

Ahem, after all...

"Berger has no enemies in his position except certain members of the Republican party that do not agree with anything about a Clinton-run White House. "

No bias there eh.

First we had Sexgate with Bubba.

Now we have Soxgate with Bergler.

It all adds up to Suxgate.

CNN no longer has the Bergler story on their home page. Apparently, it is not newsworthy.

It's the perfect Berger photo.
After all, Clinton said the whole
story is laughable: not serious at all.

"Berger is quick witted, blunt, and hard hitting when it comes to defending his views, yet he never hits below the belt."

Except when stuffing national secrets in his pants! Now I KNOW that David Letterman has been in cahoots with Mr. Buger (whoops, I left out an "r"), because he popularized the phrase "IN YOUR PANTS!" Oh! And Letterman's company is named "WORLDWIDE PANTS!"
