I think , what it really meant , was that they were not fit physical specimens, kind of like the term YELLOW DOG DEMOCRAT...a dog that is not worth a tinker's ... TO A HUNTER.
In fact, in Hans & Franz, "girlie men" didn't refer to gays (did it?) ... so why does it refer to them now?
