CHICAGO (AFP) - The Tribune Company announced a shake-up in the leadership ranks of its Newsday and Hoy newspapers in the wake of a circulation scandal.

The media titan, the second-largest US media group, said it is replacing the publishers of its Long Island paper Newsday and its Spanish-language counterpart as it moves to restore credibility in the titles.

Newsday COO Timothy Knight will take over as chief executive officer (CEO) and publisher of the newspaper effective August 15.

He suceeds Raymond Jansen, who has served as Newsday publisher since 1994, and who moved up his retirement date in light of the scandal.

"I had planned on leaving before yearend and under other circumstances I probably would have done that," Jensen said in a letter to his staff.

"But, understanding what our management has to do to repair the damage to our circulation credibility, it became apparent that my departure date should be sooner than anticipated."

At Hoy, Digby Solomon Diez, former general manager of Hoy, Chicago, has been appointed interim publisher. The former publisher, Louis Sito, has taken retirement.

Hoy publishing executive Timothy Kennedy has been tapped to serve as interim chief operating officer, effective immediately.

The Tribune Company has launched a probe into the inflation of circulation figures at both titles dating back to 2001, and last week took a 35 million dollar charge related to settlements with Newsday and Hoy advertisers in connection with the circulation scandal.
