Lanny A. Breuer is a partner handling white-collar criminal and complex civil litigation, internal corporate investigations, congressional investigations, and matters before government agencies. He is experienced in managing complex criminal and associated civil investigations, including high-profile investigations that may contain legal, political, and public relations risks. Mr. Breuer returned to Covington & Burling in 1999 after two years as Special Counsel to President Clinton. During his tenure, Mr. Breuer represented President Clinton and the White House staff in the presidential impeachment hearings and trial, four independent counsel investigations, a Justice Department task force investigation, and numerous congressional oversight investigations. From 1985 to 1989, Mr. Breuer served as an Assistant District Attorney in Manhattan, prosecuting violent and organized crime.
Since September 1999, Mr. Breuer has served as a presidential appointee to the United States Holocaust Memorial Council, which operates the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. Mr. Breuer is a steering committee member of the Council's Committee on Conscience. In May 2002, Mr. Breuer joined the Board of Trustees of Aufbau, the only German-Jewish newspaper in the world. In addition, he serves as Vice Chair of the Public Service Committee at Covington.
Mr. Breuer received his undergraduate degree from Columbia University in 1980 and received his J.D. from Columbia University's School of Law in 1985, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar. He currently resides in Washington, D.C. with his wife and two children. He is admitted to the bar in the District of Columbia and New York.
