In the midst of a deepening circulation scandal, the publishers of Newsday and Hoy in New York will be replaced, the Tribune Co. announced Monday.
At Newsday, Timothy P. Knight, who recently was appointed Newsday president and chief operating officer, was named publisher and chief executive officer, replacing Raymond Jansen, the newspaper's parent, Chicago-based Tribune Co., announced.
At Hoy, the Spanish-language publication, Digby Solomon Diez, vice president/general manager of Hoy, Chicago, has been named interim publisher, replacing Louis Sito, Hoy publisher, who will also retire. Tim Kennedy, Tribune Publishing vice president/strategy and development, will be Hoy's interim chief operating officer.
Jansen announced his retirement Monday afternoon at a meeting of senior managers and in a letter to Newsday employees. "In mid-August, I will retire as Newsday publisher," Jansen wrote. "I had planned on leaving before yearend and under other circumstances I probably would have done that. But, understanding what our management has to do to repair the damage to our circulation credibility, it became apparent that my departure date should be sooner than anticipated." Jansen has served as Newsday publisher since 1994.
In an interview in today's Newsday, Jansen had blamed the circulation overstatements on a "rogue operation" within the newspaper.
