Hinsdale legislator may face Obama
DuPage chairman considers GOP bid

By Rick Pearson
Tribune political reporter
Published July 19, 2004

State Sen. Kirk Dillard (R-Hinsdale) said Sunday that he is "warming" to a bid to replace Jack Ryan as the state's Republican U.S. Senate nominee and has received the encouragement of his ex-boss, former two-term Gov. Jim Edgar, for making such a run.

Edgar "gave me a lot of ideas," Dillard said. "He convinced me that someone with my type of profile and experience, and especially with my uniqueness in the way that I line up against my friend and colleague, [Democratic nominee] Barack Obama, that the Democrat on the pedestal can be beaten."

Dillard's name began emerging in the hours following former Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka's decision not to seek the nomination. Dillard also is a prominent member of the Republican State Central Committee, the 19-member panel that will decide on a replacement for Ryan, and he is chairman of the DuPage County GOP.

Dillard, 49, an 11-year member of the state Senate, initially expressed little immediate interest but acknowledged reconsidering after speaking to Edgar. In the three weeks since Ryan said he would resign the nomination in the aftermath of the court-ordered release of his divorce files, Republicans have had little luck in finding a credible contender to challenge Obama.

Dullard went on and on and on about what a wonderful guy Obama is,

I see your point, but while I wouldn't touch most of Obama's positions with a ten foot pole, I have to say in all honesty that I am impressed with the way he has gone out of his way to say something nice about every potential opponent du jour. A lot of Dems would be making hay out of the situation (esp. Ryan's embarrassment), but Obama has been classy about it.

It doesn't make me want to vote for him of course...

A Phyllis Schlaffly win would put the final nail in the ERA coffin.

Or, a Phyllis Schlaffly candidacy would put the final nail in the coffin of GOP hopes to do well among suburban women. She might play well in a few communities like Wheaton, but would be very unpopular among women in most communities around the seven counties. Just my opinion...

Quite the contrary. I ran a possible Phyllis Schlaffly candidacy by some think tanks, pastors, politicians, women, men .... all have stated that they would support her candidacy.

Illinoisans want a candidate who stands for everything Obama does not.

How's 'bout this, Rumsfeld resigns Defense and comes home to Illinois -- he would offer very real contrast with Obama.

OR

Maybe we could dredge up a pretty-boy trial lawyer to run against him -- the campaign theme song could be, "O Sue Bama!"

I stand by my original opinion, but you could be right. Chances are we'll never find out though...

Dillard does have a lot of ideas. Some don't even conflict with some of the others.

Notice how he speaks of what should be principles: principles, oh, well, let's just call them tactical political positions -- you know, "the way that I line up against my (bipartisan combine) friend(s) and colleague(s)..."

Can Kama Sutra Kirk join* Kama Sutra Kerry in the Senate - to become his counterpart as Master of Many Positions?

Might work for a sideshow, but do we need more like him in the U.S. Senate? It's sad, but he probably wouldn't be as bad as his old bosses Jim Thompson and Jimmy Edgar. Would I vote for him (over Obama)? Probably. Then, I suppose we can watch to see what continues to happen to his Illinois cronies and if he has been soiled himself, with his bedfellows.*

I have a hard time seeing how a "friend" of Obama could be the best ALTERNATIVE to Obama...

Illinois politics does not always make sensse, especially when the combine is threatened and circles the wagons.

Four legs good, two legs bad ... no wait ... four legs good, two legs better!

One more note to my Illinois friends: "Obama (rhymes with Osama)" is cute, but isn't working and makes us look small. We need something more substantive to go after this guy with.

How about the fact that he is a semi-communist?
