BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) The miniature Liberty Bell clanged. Elbows flew. Sweat poured down foreheads. Sales tickets were passed and, with a flick of the wrist, 10,000 shares of the Middle East Bank had more than doubled in value.
The frantic pace Sunday of those first 10 minutes of trading typified the enthusiasm behind the Iraq Stock Exchange a new institution seen as a critical step in building a new Iraqi economy.
In just five sessions, trading volume has nearly quadrupled and the value of some stocks has surged more than 600 percent, gains traders say reflects the pent up frustration of 15 months of closure.
''How can I not be excited by this?'' Taha Ahmed Abdul-Salam, the exchange's chief executive, said as he eyed the activity on the trading floor.

IRAQI STOCK EXCHANGE....................QUAGMIRE ALERT!!!!
A very good sign.
The democrat party hacks must be saddened.
Woo hoo! Miniature Liberty Bell? Isn't that a story! Now we're cooking -- men making money with legitimate business will want to defend their right to pursue wealth. Very, very good.
If (when) the Iraqi economy takes off those who made the risky investments there will be rich.
Another sign of progress being made for the Iraqi economy and overall well-being. Another story that won't make even a blip on the radar screen of the NY Times, Washington Post or other toilet paper tabloids masquerading as newspapers.
Where's the ADRs? *sob*
As the sound of automatic gunfire reverberated in the distance, he shrugged.
''I guess it will take a little more time for them to come.''
LOL, I love it! Iraq is going to be just fine. One of the things I have noticed is their incredible sense of humor.
The other side will indeed be very saddened. Their beebers are stuned. This is hughly series.
Someone said "where's the ADR's?" Indeed -- I want my elevator ride, too!
A very good sign indeed. I had no idea they were putting this kind of thing together and into action so quickly.
The SocialistDems of our country must be weeping - Saddam's terror regime out of power and no immediate opportunity for them to install their poisonous brand of socialism. No wonder the powers that be are trying to create some sort of Uberticket (or so they think) - John & John - to put on the ballot in Nov.
The heck with the ADR's, lets get an ETF (Exchange Traded Index Fund) for Iraq. There is one for about every country.
I would be glad to invest in a Free Iraq via an ETF. That way my investment would be on a index rather than a company or a couple of companies.
Thanks for the ping!
This must be scaring the elite fascists like $orea$$!
Any minute some gloomer and doomer really true conservative will be warning us about trading with Free Iraq.

Add to you comments above the elite fascists who control the UN and their socialist underlings. This has to be panic time for them.
Their worse night mare would be the spread of Capitalism throughout the Middle East.
Once we have changed the Regime in Iran, we will see true Middle East Capitalism in Iran. Then it will spread from Iraq and Iran throughout that area.
I want a Free Iraq Index fund (etf) so the rest of us can invest in this new capitalism.
But this is a good news thread,so let's all support their efforts with well wishes and perhaps, even some investments.
I can hear the refrain "Capitalist Pigs" from the Dims.
Yes, it is to my detriment that I sometimes overlook the UN's taint on all that is American. I just didn't realize how pervasive it is and how vitriolic their hatred is of all American. I will keep it in mind.

I had wondered if this would be necessary. I think it's getting to that point. I think the Iranians who reject democracy weren't too worried because they felt we would not succeed (and it's just the beginning for Iraq, a bumpy road at best) and we would lose international support and withdraw, beaten, but now that that has not happened, things are really heating up with Iran and their relations with us. I had hoped it wouldn't be necessary. But now?

Sounds good to me, too! How exciting for them. They certainly need all the protection they can get till they get it off the ground.
They said on the news this morning that most of the traders are women.
I would investin an Iraq Index Fund very quickly to show my support of these brave new Free Iraqis, and because I believe that they will be a good investment.
Good summary of my reply and what is going on around the world, thanks!
If you ever get the opportunity to talk to a real conservative capitalist who has traveled in Europe, ask them about the socialism, fascism and UNism that is rampant in old Europe. Of course they, Old Europe hate America, the home of capitalism.
I have two such friends and their conservative wives. One was born here and the other in the UK and is now an American citizen. Both of them are married to UK women, who now are super loyal Americans. They have been warning us of the anti America hatred and the growing socialism/fascism in old Europe for years.
