Performers are "frightened by the current administration's bullying tactics" as a response to their anti-Bush rants according to Elton John. Apparently George W. Bush is President of both the United States and Weight Watchers. Move over Dixie Chicks and Whoopi, Elton has jumped on the whining celebrity bandwagon for unfair "censorship." When in doubt, scream "McCarthyism."
"There's an atmosphere of fear in America right now that is deadly, added Elton. Yes, nothing says deadly like a) people not buying Dixie Chicks albums, b) Weight Watchers not wanting to be associated with raunchy comedians, and c) Madonna not releasing an anti-war music video. No word yet from Elton on the deadly factor of terrorism.
What is silly is that he thinks anyone can say anything and that no one will care, or stop buying their products, or stop listening to their music. He longs for the days back during Vietnam when celebrities like Jane Fonda got away with such nonsense.
"That's not happening now. As of this spring, there have been virtually no anti-war concertsor anti-war songs that catch on, for that matter." Meanwhile, Jadakiss is wondering in his song why Bush decided to knock down the towers, Michael Moores movie is reaching new heights as far as schlockumentaries go, and CBS keeps knocking out its Bush lied, thousands died book series.
But if Elton is not careful, he may not get to be the spokesperson for those silly sunglasses he wears. George W. Bush will see to it.
"America's heart and soul is freedom of _expression without fear of reprisal" stated a saddened Whoopi Goldberg after being canned from her best gig since Sister Act 2. She is correct on the first half of that statement at least. But the left's biggest mistake is in thinking that they can say anything (which they can) without there being consequences (though there may be). She and Elton must have jointly consulted the living, breathing Constitution to come up with that one. Lets see, freedom of _expression. Check. Freedom of association? Check. Freedom from retribution when I say stupid stuff and no one wants to give me a job? Im sure its here somewhere.
Liberals run around associating Republicans to Hitler, bin Laden, the Nazi's and the Taliban and get all hissy when someone doesn't want them to be their spokesperson any longer. The Dixie Chicks trash the President and are shocked when their down south living, gun toting, flag-waving, and mostly conservative base doesn't want to listen to them any longer. Ray Charles could have seen that one coming.
Elton went on and said it was unfair that people like the Dixie Chicks get disciplined while pro-Bush country artists like Toby Keith escape unscathed. Could that be because of his down south living, gun toting, flag-waving, and mostly conservative base that make up country music listeners and therefore want to hear him sing patriotic songs like Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue? Nah.
And in nature's demonstration of the most disastrous genetic malfunction of the 20th century we have Ozzy Osbourne. In a story that has shocked people everywhere, Ozzy compared Bush to Hitler. At least he was original. Inasmuch as he can't speak by any acceptable standard, he was still able to get his message across. Juxtaposed images of Hitler and Bush appeared on-screen at a recent fest while he performed. No word on what live animal he decided to devour onstage. I wonder when MTV President George W. Bush will have his series pulled from the line-up.
Perhaps pro-Bush celebrities dont get shunned because they dont compare John Kerry to mass-murderers and terrorists. Liberals think they should be invincible. But just as they have the right to say what they want, we have the right to not listen to their music, and the right not to buy whatever product they are pushing, and the right not to watch Sister Act. And thank heavens for that.

And Elton John is a citizen of what country??? |
Well Steve Martin used to say in his concerts how it was too bad that "Battle of the Network Stars" couldn't be fought with real guns. Got a lot of applause back then and he'd get a standing ovation today with the same line. Of course it would never happen now because Steve is now "one of them."
Good post.

But just as they have the right to say what they want, we have the right to not listen to their music, and the right not to buy whatever product they are pushing, and the right not to watch Sister Act. And thank heavens for that.Back during the "2 Live Crew" censorship flap, Little Richard said, "if I don't like it, I don't got to buy it!" I saw Leo Kottke perform two nights ago. I'm 95 per cent sure he's a Dim, but I've seen him six times over the past 25 years, and he's never, ever said anything political from the stage. And he talks a lot. Dom Deluise once said, "every time you leave the house, it's P.R."
George W. Bush will be reelected by a margin of at least ten per cent

"...Kerry wears his war wound like a crown,
He calls his wife Tuh-RAY-ayuh-zuh,
'Cause he likes the name,
And she buys him all the finest boats in town..."
Have never been impressed with him or his music, so what he 'whines' about is totally irrelevant.
I hope the Hollyweirds keep getting busted. If you make statements that take half your audience away from you--you have to be prepared to pay the price, and as this election gets hotter I think the price will get higher.
Tell that to Al Campanis, and Jimmy the Greek, and Howard Cosell and John Rocker and Fuzzy Zoeller and .....
Leo Kottke! I've seen his performances -- he's wonderful. However, one thing I learned long ago -- in the artsy fartsy world of "liberal entertainment" to get the gigs, you gotta do the time, and usually this means toting the Lib-Dem party line.
Censorship occurs when a governing body states you cannot say, think, distribute, create, etc. any though, article, speech, document, etc. with which said governing body disagrees. To put it another way, it's when those in charge say "no". Consumer choice is when you say something, do something, create something, etc. and the consumers for which your product was intended consciously decide they want nothing to do with you or your products, even if that product is totally unrelated to the actions you took with which your audience disagrees. So there you have it. One is a government action, one is consumers exercising their freedom of choice.
My theory is that leftists are who they are because at sometime in their childhood, they wanted to do something, to say something, to commit some sort of act outside the social norm, and were told "no". They didn't like it, and instead of getting over it as most normal children do, they pouted an extended pout, all the way into their "adult" years. Now they adopt an ideology where "no" is the one thing you are never, ever allowed to say. So my advice to celebrities is to remember I have the right to say "no" to your products, for any reason I so choose. That isn't censorship; it's me showing good taste.
Precisely my attitude about Hollyweirdos and other show biz freaks.
Wasn't it Peter Jennings who refused to allow Toby Keith to perform on a July 4th concert show last year because "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue" was too offensive? Did I miss all the stories about Elton John protesting that act of censorship?
...and he's dead.
Elton, those are American citizens, not our elected leaders making the decision NOT to buy, listen to or agree with your point of view. It is a FREE country. Make of it what you will but I refer to it as a personal choice between fairies and realists.
