If your news is true, this is quite disappointing. Do you have 'inside' information?, as in "I work there, so I know what is really going on?" ( I hope the answer will be 'no')....

Yes, Hazel O'Leary......and when she was ordered to save her computer files for an investigation she erased everything. Said oops and went on her way.

No university should run Los Alamos or Livermore.

You are wrong.
She chartered Madonna's plane and gave the computers to some African nation (the disks weren't wiped).
The UC folks working at Los Alamos retire at 100 percent salary.

Probably. I'm reading Notra Trulock's "Kindred Spirit" right now and it's about time Los Alamos got security conscious. But I heard last Friday that they'd lost more security discs - I think I heard it on Fox, so is this referring to the same incident or is this something new within the span of a week?
Universities have no business running a national laboratory. Academia isn't trustworthy.

This willful flouting of the rules must stop, and I don't care how many people I have to fire to make it stop. If you think the rules are silly, if you think compliance is a joke, please resign now and save me the trouble," Nanos added...(while dodging a hail of spitballs amd paper airplanes...)
To: mastercylinder
"As of today, director Nanos has suspended all operations at the laboratory," an internal e-mail obtained by Wired News read. "This is a very serious step." Hopefully if it is a serious as it is stated, the next step will be to clean the house out and look for replacements.
After all, we aren't lacking talent to the point of concern for dependable and capable replacements in this country.

civilian control of Los Alamos is an abject failure and it musted be fixed immediately. Not quite. The current control of Los Alamos is a disaster, and must be fixed immediately. But that doesn't mean that military control is a better option.
UC (or any University, for that matter) is not a place to be trusted. Gov't civilian service is more likely a better way to control it.
Control going through elected officials is always better. We might not know much about what happens at labs like Los Alamos, but we do know what goals our elected officials have.

The only part of UCLA that should have any continued business with the labs is the history department.

This willful flouting of the rules must stopI know it is serious and it is long past due for this statement to be made, but I can't help but visualize Frank Burns and Margaret Houlihan saying that and finishing with "they're ruining this war."

This lab should be under military control I agree. There is no commandment that Los Alamos has to be managed by a university. They've done a disastrous job at that and have lost the right.
Heads need to roll.

All is well - not to fear. The disks were returned this afternoon by Joseph C. Wilson and his CIA agent wife. It was all a mixup - they were in good hands . .
