Wilson's source for the "names and dates" statement might be this March 22, 2003 Washington Post article

CIA Questioned Documents Linking Iraq, Uranium Ore

"... Shortly after receiving the documents, the United States turned them over to the International Atomic Energy Agency. Within weeks, U.N. inspectors, along with an independent team of international experts, determined that the documents were fake.

One of the documents was a letter, dated July 2000 and apparently signed by the Niger president, discussing Iraq's agreement to purchase 500 tons of uranium oxide, and certifying that it was authorized under the Niger constitution of 1965. But U.N. officials quickly noted that Niger had promulgated a new constitution in 1999, and that the letter's signature bore little resemblance to the actual signature of President Tandja Mamadou.

Another letter, dated in 1999, was signed by the Niger foreign minister. But the letterhead belonged to the military government that had been replaced earlier in 1999, and the signatory had left the job of foreign minister in 1989.

The only specific, earlier mention of these details is in a March 16, 2003 London Times. I can't find an actual IAEA statement stating these details.

Could you please add me to your Wilson ping list?

As for your question on Wilson's contacts, it is indeed one of the most interesting open items that remain. What do we know about what Plame does/did in her role as an operative on weapons of mass destruction? Given the CIA's performance on pre-war intelligence and given Plame sent her husband on a mission for which he was totally unqualified, one can conclude that either this was symptom of Agency incompetence or part of an ongoing, deliberate effort to undermine US intelligence.

Or, (C), all of the above, i.e., symptom of incompetence, as well as part of an ongoing deliberate effort to undermine US intelligence.

The politicization of intelligence follows its evisceration (e.g., Stansfield Turner fires 820 case officers October 31, 1977).

To this day the vaunted Central Intelligence Agency will not credit the Czech report that Al Atta met with al-Ani in Prague April 2001.

Hand in hand with the Clymer-Wilsonian "no yellowcake" is the CIA's tedious and infantile mantra "no al Qaeda Iraq connections".

This partisan newthink blinds us to the next event in CONUS.

Reading thru the Senate intelligence Committee's report one can see that the CIA was not managing things very well.

Speaking directly to the conclusions laid out in the report.

Lots of Redactions though!

I think they needed a major overhauling of their Management!

And maybe some purging also!

I don't at all disagree but I'm not sure that partisan is a strong enough description for the agenda.

When the President cited the British intelligence, Mr. Wilson immediately assumed he was referring to his "in-depth investigation", as opposed to, um, I don't know, THE BRITISH investigations.

By Jove, I think you've got it!

Wilson thought process: Who does that cowboy think he is, saying that Saddam 'bought' [not sought] uranium, when I went over there for 8 stinking days so that I could come back and report "nope, no purchases from Iraq recently. He's an f****n' liar! I'm Ambassador Joseph C Wilson!

PS His company website has disappeared into the ether. I saw it last summer when I googled his name, and his lovely wife was listed as a consultant. I could kick myself for not saving the home page.

There was a HUMINT report given to the Navy by an individual who said uranium destined for Iraq was stored in a warehouse in Benin. The Navy passed on the intel- including contact info for the source to the CIA. But the CiA didn't bother to look into it according to the Senate investigation. The source wasn't contacted. It may be bogus but if it wasn't even looked into, who can tell.

I'm just throwing this in in case it's relevent to anyone :

APRIL 26, 2002 : (CIA INSPECTOR GENERAL BRITT SNIDER RESIGNS) Washington: A congressional investigation of the intelligence failures surrounding the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks has been thrown off course by the sudden resignation of a former CIA official hired to lead the inquiry but criticized for being too cozy with his former employer. L. Britt Snider, former inspector general at the CIA, resigned under pressure Friday, less than three months into a high-stakes probe designed to determine why the nation's spy agencies failed to pick up any warning of the attacks on the WTC and Pentagon. ...But congressional sources confirmed that Snider was forced out amid growing concerns over his management of the investigation, ranging from the tone of his leadership to his decisions on personnel. Several sources said Snider's resignation was sparked by troubling questions that surfaced in recent weeks about whether one or more of his hires lacked proper security clearances to view classified material. ... Several GOP members, including Kyl and Sen. Richard C. Shelby (R-Ala.), the ranking Republican on the Senate committee, expressed doubts about Snider because of his close ties to CIA Director George J. Tenet. Snider had served as a special counsel to Tenet at the CIA, and was general counsel to the Senate Intelligence Committee when Tenet was its staff director in the late 1980s and early 1990s. http://216.239.35.100/search?q=cache:dOSoOu8a48AC:www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/news/3164021.htm+members+2002+%22Senate+intelligence%22&hl=en&ie=UTF-8

Here is Joe Wilson ...

NOTE the very last line on this pathetic web page.

Restore Honesty . Com
A Letter from Joe Wilson
on John Kerry

I'm not a politician and I'm not a political partisan. I've served under Presidents from both parties. My loyalty has always been to country and constitution.

The first President Bush appointed me as Ambassador to two African countries and President Clinton put me in charge of African Affairs at the National Security Council. So when this President Bush's Administration sent me to Africa to investigate claims that Saddam Hussein was seeking to buy materials for weapons of mass destruction, I was ready to serve.

But I wasn't ready to keep quiet when this President misled the nation in his State of the Union Address. Because of that, leakers in the Bush White House illegally revealed that my wife worked in the CIA - endangering her life and that of my family. They tried to intimidate me and others who were willing to speak up and tell the truth.

"...I wasn't ready to keep quiet when this President misled the nation in his State of the Union Address..."

Some people have said I was courageous to speak truth to the power of the Bush White House. But let me tell you, what I have done doesn't hold a candle to the courage that John Kerry showed as a young man and throughout his political career. I am supporting him for President because he has been willing to tell the truth no matter what the pressure. He is ready to restore truth and honor to the White House. And I hope that everyone else who is outraged by this Administration and who wants to change America will join me in doing all you can to make John Kerry our next President.

"...John Kerry...has the personal courage and integrity that I want in the leader of our great nation..."

In deciding on the best candidate to support in next year's election, I looked for qualities that are important in a President: leadership, experience and courage. There are many candidates who possess admirable traits but only one who has summoned the nerve to stand up to our government and for what's right over and over again: John Kerry.

To speak out against bad policies after a career of accomplishments, as I recently did, is a civic duty. To do so as a young person, as John Kerry did, in the face of the unremitting official hostility to end a bad war, is truly inspiring. John Kerry didn't have to go to Vietnam. He volunteered and served bravely earning a Silver Star, a Bronze Star, and three Purple Hearts. And when he came home as a decorated hero, he didn't have to fight the war. But John Kerry helped lead the fight to end the war, he earned the wrath of Richard Nixon and his cronies, and he won the respect of Americans for his courage.

"...I am honored to endorse John Kerry and to commit myself to his campaign to wrest our democracy back from those who have so squandered the public trust..."

Throughout his career in public service he has been ready to hold government accountable again and again. He blew the whistle on Ronald Reagan and Oliver North's secret war in Central America. He exposed Manuel Noriega's drug laundering operation. And he wrote a nationally acclaimed book on fighting global terrorism long before September 11th.

John Kerry is a decorated veteran, an experienced public servant, and a man of integrity. But most of all, he has the personal courage and integrity that I want in the leader of our great nation.

George Bush's Administration has betrayed our trust - I know that personally. I am honored to endorse John Kerry and to commit myself to his campaign to wrest our democracy back from those who have so squandered the public trust.

I hope you will join us.
