There is a large fire in the Santa Clarita Area of Los Angeles County....if you are in SoCal, that is the very large smoke clouds to the north.
Yep. My gauge says 21 out of the SW. And it's 96F. Part of the wind is the temp difference between the high desert and the canyon/pass areas, right? It just starts rushing through there toward the east/northeast.
That red is new burn...I think the fire will keep traveling east deeper into the forest, alternating direction with the winds.
Karl, thank you for taking time to post all the updates, photos, satellite images and maps.

Some group of firebugs again or what?
I can see the smoke up the hillside from here. (No it's not near me in terms of danger.) There are some pricey homes up there.
Sounds like they're getting a quick upper-hand on it.
I think it is just hot..hot..hot.
People flip the cigarette butts out the window...
Unbelievably, there are some fools dumb enough to do that.
Looks like the smoke has ceased in that area. How's it going in Santa Clarita?
the fire is jumping around again...I think they are going to evacuate people that they let back in....
The KABC chopper pundit says the fire "has layed down" for the night (at 5:30?)
A fire fighting helicopter drops fire retardant on a hotspot on the Foothill Fire as it burns through the hills above Santa Clarita, California, July 19, 2004. The fire has burned more than 6,000 acres and firefighters have been hampered by the steep terrain and the hot, windy weather.

A group of firefighters (lower right) are dwarfed by the flames they had to flee after the east side of the Foothill Fire blew over fire lines in heavy wind while burning through the hills above Santa Clarita, California, July 19, 2004. The fire has burned more than 6,000 acres and has proved very difficult to contain due to the rugged hilly terrain and hot windy weather.

Thank you, these men are brave men, I can't begin to imagine what they are going through.
It is amazing how few people have any idea of what is required to fight a fire.
This one's creeping west, or a new fire?
well, this fire started where the Aquaduct comes down the hill near the 5....so it has just been zig zagging northeast and southeast for two days...they put that phoschek down to prevent it from dumping into Sylmar. LA City Fire had 10 engines sitting there all day, and the inmate crews have been backfiring up the hill when the wind is blowing north.
A lot of that backfiring you hear about will be brush clearance that the ecofreaks won't let them do....last year's Stevenson's Ranch "stand" was just that...they let it burn up to the subdivision (with the 200 foot clear zone they had), because they are never allowed to clear brush or do controlled burns in CA anymore.
they are waiting for the bomb squad in one area....something exploded, and they saw what looked like another grenade....
I am sure we will hear more about it in the morning....maybe it will rain tonight (one can hope)
I happened to be up & listening. They actually do "good morning" wakeup calls to the guys on the line at 4:50. Interesting.
