People forget that for many years H.P. Lovecraft was editor for a little magazine called "The Conservative".

And Russell Kirk tried his hand at gothic literature.

I'd rather not hear about Robert Reich's inflatable proclivities, thanks anyway.

There is a bit too much whining by liberals on genital matters. "Don't ask, don't tell" is the best way to preserve "the privacy of the bedroom."

"Obscenity charge dropped against Texas woman who hosts sex-toy sales parties"

Wanna take a bet on what kind of politician made this an issue in the first place? What an absolute waste of police manpower and taxpayer money.

Now, I will be the first one to admit that I am QUITE distinctively unfamiliar with dildo sales in Texas. I'll yield to other experts who concern themselves with such things. [irony] My branch of philosophical conservatism did not cover this territory either in college or grad school, I'm afraid. Admittedly, things may be different in Texas than what I am familiar with here on the staid and preppy suburban east coast.

Part of my mission in life is to point out cases where authority sticks its myriad noses under a tent, one where it does not belong.

Some puckered-up bluenose(s) came up with this law in Texas, which caused a chain reaction of law enforcement actions, court actions, lawyers springing into action... and over WHAT?

Better those resources were spent on tracking down child porn criminals.

If my rhetorical style caused any confusion, apologies. I actually welcome libertarian-conservative debate. As an intellectual Catholic, there is much that I could comment on about the deplorable misadventures of religion in modern America.

I think I have only actually seen a dildo once in my life. Quite some years back. A bachelorette party came storming through a bar in Maryland one night and one of the partiers had one of those phallic squirt guns loaded with some liquor shots of some sort. I...uh...did not accept the offer for a drink. And haven't really thought that much about the incident since. Until now that is. I would assume the study of dildo legislation and litigation could be the source of some high comedy. As a private citizen, it's not something that would have ever concerned me.

S'okay. It's hard to discern personalities by merely observing words formed by electron emissions on a piece of glass.

As for the comedic value of this, er, topic: It would be funny, if it weren't for the seriousness of the tight-fisted cretins who write legislation that leads to this kind of thing. There's a similar streak in Alabamastan. I think it's that Ol' Southern Demacrat thing.

I'm puzzled by small towns where it's impossible to buy beer late on Sundays. The evolution of religious-based morality tends to tie in with several different sects, differing attitudes.

I could show you a book I have from the 1940s, written by a Catholic woman, which essentially theorizes that an erection is a sin unless you make an effort to "arrest" it to submission and prevent yourself from "enjoying" any imaginary fantasy imagery. People have had a wide variety of bizarre ideas on these matters.

I live in one of those towns. When Wally World started to build a Silly Center here, the town bosses balked at giving them a liquor license. When Wal-Mart threatened to back out, the opinion suddenly changed.

As for your second paragraph, sounds like what I've been talking about. Sex, to those minds, shouldn't be done except under dire circumstances, and even then it shouldn't be enjoyed. It becomes a chore, not a pleasure.

Then there is that other extreme, which I pointed out earlier... the "everything goes" extreme. And I kinda buy into that, unless it involves children or unwilling adults.
By all means, feel free to impose sanctions on those perpetrators. I'll even chip in, if allowed. But otherwise, like some other things, it ain't none of the government's damn business.

So the latest thing in conservatives is the "personally opposed but" crowd? Maybe today's young people are so indoctrinated in individualism and relativism that they no longer even think about the quality of the larger society in which they will have to raise their children. But maybe this is just wishful thinking on the part of the NYTimes crowd. I certainly hope so.

Well, if it's any consolation, I'm 19 and already consider myself a paleoconservative.

Okay, that might not have been any consolation. ;)

Anyway, I am firmly opposed to any type of foreign aid and any state-sponsored deviant sexual behavior.

Bill Buckley served as an infantry lieutenant. It would be interesting to see how many of these would-be replacements have had a day in uniform.

I think conservatives had a terrific run with the likes of Buckley, Helms, Goldwater, Reagan as well as smaller players like Paul Laxalt and Meldrim Thompson. The current crop does not seem to measure up to the past one.

I can't understand the lack of military service. Their country has been attacked. Bill Buckley and William Rusher were in uniform during this period. Where are they serving?
