Dylan Glenn hopes the third time lands him back in Washington.
The Columbus native, who has worked as an aide in two presidential administrations, is seeking a seat in Congress for the third time since 1998. Glenn lost twice to Democratic incumbent Sanford Bishop in Georgia's 2nd District.
Glenn now is trying to win the seat in the ultra-conservative 8th District. He is running against Lynn Westmoreland, Mike Crotts and Tom Mills for the Republican nomination.
"I have been here before and I know what it is like to be unsuccessful," Glenn said. "That teaches you that you never want to lose again. And it gives you a better feel on how to run a campaign."
You run a campaign with money. As of June 30, Glenn had raised more than $1.1 million to finance his efforts. The majority of that money has come from outside the 8th District and outside Georgia. Glenn is using that money to get his message out in a district that covers parts of Columbus, Macon and metro Atlanta.
He points to his federal experience as the thing that separates him from his main opponents Westmoreland and Crotts, both longtime members of the Georgia General Assembly.
"Given a voting card, we would use it the same about 98 or 99 percent of the time," Glenn said. "What distinguishes me is I have federal experience. I have been a part of tax-cut legislation, working on Social Security. I have also been there working with the leadership in Congress and this president."
That's a real tough race for Glenn. He's facing two local politico bigshots. He might have an easier time in a statewide race, when he doesn't have to contend with local power bases .... but maybe he can pull this off, who knows. Haven't heard many updates about the race.
