CA: Governor ratchets up war of words

Vowing to "fight like a warrior," Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Thursday delivered his most severe admonition yet to legislative Democrats, whom he blamed for blocking a budget to try to shield unions and other special interests.

"I will stay here until 2006. I will stay here and I will stay here and I will stay here and I will fight like a warrior for the people of California," Schwarzenegger said at a hastily called Capitol press conference. "And there is no one that can stop me, and anyone that pushes me around, I will push back, including the Democrats and the special interests."

The governor's sharp warning - and word of his plans to campaign for his budget in Southern California today - came as the effects of an overdue budget hit the Capitol. Legislative staff members, who were due to be paid Thursday, sought loans from their banks to make up for their missed paychecks.

Administration officials said late Thursday that Schwarzenegger plans to campaign through the weekend in districts where Democrats hold a legislative seat but where voters supported the recall and Schwarzenegger's candidacy for governor.

Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez charged that "Republicans are asking us to help fire thousands of hard-working (school) bus drivers just to put more money in the pockets of the private bus companies."

If ole Pete thinks they're irrelevant, why's he meeting with them?

Maybe Arnold is finally waking up to what Bush apparently hasn't, yet: "Making Nice" with most Democrats won't work. Not where "work" means "make them any more amenable to compromise on even the most modest of spending cuts."

I hope he stomps em. The heck with what his wife thinks. It's long past time he got PI$$ED OFF. Now THAT is something I would like to see, because I believe that his basic beliefs are Milton-Friedman-ian; he's just got this "loves to be loved" syndrome so bad that he seldom follows those beliefs.

I agree. This is the most hopeful sign I've seen in months. Unfortunately, the moment he makes clear whose ox is going to get it, the media howling will begin. His historic friends in Hollywood will call. His wife will turn cold. I don't think Arnold really understands that to leftists, power in politics is everything, more important than family, friendship, or country.

IMO, the spine it takes to withstand that kind of vindictive hatred from the left does not appear to be part of Arnold's makeup.

You Keep on Truckin', Governor Arnold!!! Dems are refusing to even address the issues. And are holding up the budget, for the umpteeth time, like so many spoiled children holding their breaths until they turn blue. Learning that some legislators are not getting their paychecks as scheduled, is as great a tough love lesson as can be given. Let these "blockaders" to preserve CA, learn how it feels to not get a "paycheck", as so many counties have been forced to deal with, and because of Dem politics.

Message to Democrats: Let our people go free!
