Bush bus rolls through friendly terrain
The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel ^ | July 14, 2004 | ALAN J. BORSUK

Posted on 07/15/2004 12:00:58 PM PDT by cyncooper

Showing a strong offense against his opponents, a strong defense of his record and a flair for spectacle, President Bush took his re-election campaign more than 100 miles by bus across eastern Wisconsin on Wednesday.

~snip~

To thousands of Wisconsinites not at the rallies, Bush's visit meant a caravan of buses and support vehicles traveling along main streets of Menomonee Falls, Sussex, West Bend, Kewaskum, Fond du Lac, Oshkosh, Neenah, Menasha, Appleton and Grand Chute like an unexpected, brief but remarkable reprise of the Fourth of July.

Thousands of people lined the way, many waving flags or pro-Bush signs. Although clearly outnumbered, a notable number of people along the way showed their support for Kerry. Larger gatherings of anti-Bush and pro-Kerry people occurred outside both the Waukesha and Green Bay-area events but within clear view of those in the Bush caravan.

But as the vehicles rolled northward, the overall reception was clearly friendly. In the front yard of a farmhouse near Kewaskum, for example, two men stood proudly holding a large American flag.

While Bush's bus is nearly windowless, it has a spot near the front for him to see and be seen as he rides.

~snip~

Throw in a few high-profile guests for the tour - his daughter Barbara; his chief political adviser, Karl Rove; Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy G. Thompson; and, in Green Bay, entertainers Dennis Miller and Wayne Newton - and stops at a candy store in West Bend and a custard stand in Oshkosh, and you had more than 10 hours of high-profile, almost non-stop campaigning by the incumbent Republican president.

From all accounts President Bush was greeted enthusiastically and warmly in The Dairy State.

Ping to the Journal-Sentinel take on the visit.

Pretty good though I note the reporter describes GWB as "attacking" Kerry. I would think that term more aptly describes John Kerry's style, like the disgraceful appearance this morning before the NAACP.

No matter, I think Bush can win Wisconsin!

Reminds me of the old election trains that would carry candidates across America to meet the voters. Cool.

The MJS is a liberal paper. It was their TV station, WTMJ, that caught Dem Gov Doyle's campaign staff on tape helping developmentally disabled people vote during a Bingo party w/snacks and prizes. Doyle, our former AG, was still elected.

These areas W visited include some Dem strongholds, so this is very encouraging.

Wisconsin is an important state for Bush to win. I think Wisconsin is going to be one of those schizophrenic states that can go either way.

Milwaukee and Madison are the most heavily populated cities and infested with liberals.

The liberals in Milwaukee can't be trusted as seen in the 2000 election with poles left open late, particularly in the inner city, "smokes for votes" and voter fraud.

I hope President Bush wins Wisconsin in a landslide, but I have a gut feeling it's going to be a nail-biter, IMHO.

Thank you for linking that. I read it and posted my admiration for paying for his own candy (which sounds delicious).

I used to live there....In fact, we were just up there on vacation! I was surprised by the positive tone when my sister emailed it to me so looked to see if it was posted.

(Tom Barrett used to be my congressman. I understand he's now mayor of Milwaukee)

Speaking of WTMJ, I miss having Charlie Sykes on the radio to this day.

I heard Larry Sabato on Fox and Friends this morning say "how Wisconsin goes, so goes the election". I usually hear Ohio as THE state to win. According to Sabato it's Wisconsin.

Beware: This morning John Kerry spent more time on "counting every vote" than any other topic in his speech. If they try things like that any nonsense of cigs for votes it must be met with our very strongest outrage.

They are going to try to steal it again and the best prevention, besides catching them in the act, will be heavy turnout for Dubya.
