Will Doom 3 revive the struggling PC Gaming Industry?

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Since 2000, developer id Software has told the world the next installment of "Doom," the game that kicked off the action genre, would ship "when it's done."

Good news, gamers: It's done. In the lexicon of the industry, "Doom 3" has gone gold. That means with id Software's work done, publisher Activision is duplicating copies to ship to retail. What it all boils down to is you'll be able to pick up a copy at retail on Aug. 5, though some stores could start selling the game as early as Aug. 3.

Ah, I found the Geek Brigade...life is good. :)

I'm one of those that can't play a spellcaster worth a darn in an RPG. Morrowind, Neverwinter Nights, four years online playing Everquest and two in Asheron's Call...didn't matter. I was always either the martial artist (AC and Neverwinter) or the big barbarian guy with the biggest honkin' implement of destruction I could find (EQ and Morrowind).

I went through MW the first time with a Nord barbarian, then went back through with a Dunmer custom-class spellcaster/thief type. OK in a fight, lethal from a distance with arrows, and used just enough magic to get himself over tough spots.

Hey, COEXERJ145, what was your handle in WWIIOL? I played off and on for a year and a half as "fpmoose", British mostly. Great game, although I don't agree with all the decisions the Rats made.

#6, my God, it's a small world. I remember the days of you and the 4th flying for the purple horde on WarBirds! :) (I flew WB as "moos" and AH as "fpmoose"...just activated an account on Aces High II but have been too busy to do much with it.)

Yes, well, dear, you remember that your loving husband tried Planetside (online MMO first-person-shooter) for a few months and bailed because my ego couldn't take getting repeatedly getting capped by 11-year-olds. So that's why I do nice boring game things like fly Flight Simulator 2004. :)

Although with your Neverwinter Nights addiction and predisposition toward playing breakable characters, I'm STILL faintly hearing "The rage of the Red Tiger, unleashed!" in my sleep...

I have semi-fond memories of my poor starting-out assassin...scrambling up on a rock so the big bad rat can't get her, and pinging it with (lots of) arrows. :-)

Beats hearing Jumpgate jargon in your sleep. Trust me on this one. :-)

::flutters lashes innocently:: Whaaat? Just because I played an assassin...ok, and a rogue in Neverwinter Nights..and, um, all three of the Thief games (it's an addiction, can't help it) doesn't mean I'm not thrifty, brave, clean and reverent. Really.

With a glass dagger and long bow, YOU better stay on her good side. LOL. What a game. Like I said earlier, Morrowind would be awesome online.

Sometimes you just gotta be bad. My brother and I played Knights of the Old Republic. Once as a Light Jedi and once as a Dark Jedi. Light side was sugar coated. Playing as a big bad meany Dark Side Jedi was simply Evil. I'll have to try Morrowind later playing somebody kind of shifty.

Does ANYONE have the new ATI X800 XT PE video card? I'm trying to find one, but ATI keeps pushing back the official release date. Several sites say they have them, and a few people have recieved them, but I have had no luck.

Far Cry is a good first person shooter, but it takes a massive gaming system to properly play it. My 3.2C with 1 gig of PC-4000 RAM and a 9800XT barely handles it at 1280x1040. I am going to assume Doom III will be the same way.

I occasionally kill time with the first "Quake" or "Duke Nukem 3D." The Duke add-on "Duke It Out In DC" is a blast, except for one thing. The mission is to rescue Clinton, who has been abducted by aliens. Not much incentive there.

NewEgg only has the X800 Pro. The XT PE is proving more difficult to find.

Gateway claimed to have them in stock, only to tell the people that ordered "oops, none until August!".

I am one of those that MUST have the latest and greatest equipment, unfortunately. I am a tad behind in upgrading!

Heh! You and me both. I'm going to get the Thermaltake "Skull" case with the highest and best crap in it I can find with about 2g RAM. I priced a company to put it all together at about $1,500.00.

But, alas, I'm still in (married) debt, and must exercize spending disipline.

I was hooked on Turok-II till I finally broke free of the mesmorizing effect it had on me which had me spending literally hours on end playing the damn thing.....

These games are evil and parents who allow these things to be their babysitters deserve all the problems they are going to get due to parental neglect.
