NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Since 2000, developer id Software has told the world the next installment of "Doom," the game that kicked off the action genre, would ship "when it's done."

Good news, gamers: It's done. In the lexicon of the industry, "Doom 3" has gone gold. That means with id Software's work done, publisher Activision is duplicating copies to ship to retail. What it all boils down to is you'll be able to pick up a copy at retail on Aug. 5, though some stores could start selling the game as early as Aug. 3.

It's what people want.

A want that is often artificially created. Thank God I have a life that's completely fulfilled. (Car = for going from point A to B; House = a domicile, period; HDTV = waste of fricking money, allows China to increase their GDP and therefore their military; Video Games = mind numbing stupidity, creates several vapid generations).

So let's say I get a wild hair tonight and decide to create a sorceress. You think all cold is the way to go, or maybe mostly cold for Normal but save a few points for lightning/fire when she moves up to Nightmare?

You can't see it right now, but I am swooning. I'm laid halfway back with one languid hand to my forehead, fluttering my eyelashes.

My God, how old are you??? ;op

My first computer was a TRS-80 Model 1 Level 1.

4k of memory (that's right 4 K!)

with a monochrome graphics resolution of 128 x 27

Purchase in 1980.

No floppy. It was all cassette driven.

Morrowind is life sucking. I finally just went cold turkey and turned my back on it. Civ III seemed safe, but soon I was as hooked on it as I was on Morrowind.

About a month ago I was given Dungeon Siege - Legends of Aranna, Far Cry, and Rise of Nations (with the expansion pack) for my birthday.

I have forgotten what my wife looks like...

My present (and disused) gamename appears to be "nosix". From clicking around on the Eagle Squadrons roster list I gather my first handle was "bcnu" as that's member #1 on the list; shortly after the live date I passed everything off to Chipwich as I hadn't yet managed to actually get the thing to let me enter without locking up ... but that was a long time ago.

I can see your concerns about the brigade spawning idea but CRS hasn't been shy about trying things that are unheard of (such as a combined arms MMO sim). In any case as you found out "bite me" is poor diplomacy :)

A Trash-80! My best friend Kira had one of those. Her cassette drive was on a card table, and we had to enter and exit the room VERY carefully, because if a program was loading and we bumped the card table, the cassette would skip the program and we'd have to rewind and start over.

Dungeon Siege is another very excellent one. IIRC, that's the game that shook Bacon out of his first-person-shooter elitism and tossed him back into RPGs!

I'm chicken to try spell characters, 'cause those things DIE lots in early levels.

The only time my cold sorceress was in danger early on was against that Amazon chick (Blood Raven?), since she moved really fast relative to my shot speed. Aside from that it's just a matter of not getting surrounded, so I much prefer cold to fire or lightning for the freezing effects.

Oh, and Duriel kicked my ass, but that's mainly because it's the one spot where my computer slowed to a crawl.

You'll have to save a point for Static Field, at least, and it's good to have the secondary skills (Hell is unplayable without them - and there are quite a few monsters immune to both cold and fire...grrrr!), but a cold sorceress is an amazing Normal/Nightmare killing machine. I like Ice Blast/Blizzard, some people prefer Glacial Spike/Frozen Orb. I actually had to use a short sword to help me kill things early on, but once you get Ice Blast (a truly nasty spell that turns those little Democrats into ice cubes so they can't be Revived) at level 6, you're off to the races!

I wonder what the soundtrack is like, if any. I loved the Trent Reznor soundtrack for the initial Quake, fit the dark and violent mood perfectly.

Games I'm playing:
Magic the Gathering (Microprose with W2k patch)
City of Heroes

In Hiatus:
Gemstone IV

None of these require anything really over the top, hardware-wise, or time commitment-wise. Jump in and play, and quit when you want. I'm all about nuturing my short attention span.

Lag is a problem on older machines. The trick to killing Duriel with a cold sorceress (or a fire druid) is to get boots that give you a faster run/walk (Treads of Cthon are good) and then run circles around him while casting Blizzard (or Fissure, for the druid). He can't quite ever catch up with you and he just spins around taking damage until he dies.
