A WWS Exclusive Article
Note from the Editors: You are about to read an account of what happened during a domestic flight that one of our writers, Annie Jacobsen, took from Detroit to Los Angeles. The WWS Editorial Team debated long and hard about how to handle this information and ultimately we decided it was something that should be shared. What does it have to do with finances? Nothing, and everything. Here is Annie's story.
On June 29, 2004, at 12:28 p.m., I flew on Northwest Airlines flight #327 from Detroit to Los Angeles with my husband and our young son. Also on our flight were 14 Middle Eastern men between the ages of approximately 20 and 50 years old. What I experienced during that flight has caused me to question whether the United States of America can realistically uphold the civil liberties of every individual, even non-citizens, and protect its citizens from terrorist threats.
On that Tuesday, our journey began uneventfully. Starting out that morning in Providence, Rhode Island, we went through security screening, flew to Detroit, and passed the time waiting for our connecting flight to Los Angeles by shopping at the airport stores and eating lunch at an airport diner. With no second security check required in Detroit we headed to our gate and waited for the pre-boarding announcement. Standing near us, also waiting to pre-board, was a group of six Middle Eastern men. They were carrying blue passports with Arabic writing. Two men wore tracksuits with Arabic writing across the back. Two carried musical instrument cases thin, flat, 18" long. One wore a yellow T-shirt and held a McDonald's bag. And the sixth man had a bad leg -- he wore an orthopedic shoe and limped. When the pre-boarding announcement was made, we handed our tickets to the Northwest Airlines agent, and walked down the jetway with the group of men directly behind us.
My four-year-old son was determined to wheel his carry-on bag himself, so I turned to the men behind me and said, "You go ahead, this could be awhile." "No, you go ahead," one of the men replied. He smiled pleasantly and extended his arm for me to pass. He was young, maybe late 20's and had a goatee. I thanked him and we boarded the plan.
Once on the plane, we took our seats in coach (seats 17A, 17B and 17C). The man with the yellow shirt and the McDonald's bag sat across the aisle from us (in seat 17E). The pleasant man with the goatee sat a few rows back and across the aisle from us (in seat 21E). The rest of the men were seated throughout the plane, and several made their way to the back.

Well. While entirely agreeing with your views about the article, I too join my hands in prayer to the Almighty that when 9/11 repeats (knowing the mind-set of islamic terrorists as we all do, it is bound to happen again) "there is someone in the White House...who would escalate this war to a level commensurate with victory"... total anihilation of Islamic terrorism.
This thread is still active.
As I read the story, it occured to me that these guys were much too obvious. At the least, if this was a test run, they were, in addition, taking pleasure in taunting the other passengers, especially in theirdemeanor, communal bathrooom antics, and the finger across the throat gesture.
I bet they were yucking it up later.
Let's also keep in mind that the so-called "wedding party" that was shot up in western Iraq by our fly boys, also had "musicians" present.
With sanctions against Syria in place, there is no reason to allow Syrians here on visas.

Exactly the reason why I think this was the real deal, and not a dry run.
In light of the news this week that Sandy Berger (on the right in the photo) smuggled out (In his pants and socks) from a secure location classified info relating to the 9-11 attacks, this phots i evne more prescient.
Berger is pointing the finger at himself as the culprit.

Outsourcing or not, Americans need to recognize who their friends are and who aren't.
i think it's "silly" to make my father miss his plane because his wheelchair needs to be inspected with a fine tooth comb, when the man clearly looks disabled, his ankles are swollen and he can hardly get his ID out of a pocket. All this sillyness while clean shaven arabs calmly walk through security. ugh

I'm amazed that someone read my post almost 1000 posts later!
I guess pilots flying high learn to survey the land like eagles, and for some unknown reason, you picked mine from the 1100 posts on this subject. But of course you are correct, that is an obvious corollary of what I said.
I couldn't agree more, we are being probed and it's simply a matter of time. Sounds as though it may have been an aborted strike if the testimony is accurate, which I believe it to be. While we wait for everyone to hold hands with the terrorists and welcome them into our country because we have laws stating we MUST, there will be more planes falling from the sky. This is not a question of racial profiling, its an investigation of the typology of a killer nation that wants yankee heads. While I try and give everyone the benefit of the doubt, I also reserve my own personal right to fear or suspect whomever I would like. In this case, I most definitely would've suspected something and perhaps simply stood up and asked 'whos in with me in the case that our friends from the ME want to keep acting suspicious'????? kill PC before it Kills us......i have been circulating this story around as much as I can..people must know
Suspicious activity? Perhaps. But the flight went on, landed safely, and nothing untoward happened.
Is there a number I can call when my rights to safety and well being are being infringed upon by large groups of arabs who want to kill me and my family? I feel overwhelmed by the way they look at me, can I sue? .....I see them in the street, I let them know Im suspicious!
I've been letting everyone I know of about the story too. The day is going to come, and soon, that a terrorsit strike involving an airliner will happen. We will then go back to this story and say, "see, this wasn't a surprise", and hopefully America will join together and say enough of this PC nonsense. Sadly, it will take another incident, and even that may not be enough. The left will fight this tooth and nail, no matter what the American body count is.
>>If these guys were "musicians" then I'm a rocket scientist. <<
I'm wondering if their post flight interrogation included playing for the investigators?
Probably not.
i agree al_c, we are so overcome with the fear of being offensive to people, we forget that we are made of meat and can blow up very easily...
Let me add. You are a fool.
well put RJ, guess who those arabs over in IRaque are 'profiling' for kidnappings...thats right, us hmmmm
