Doesn't that then mean his children are bastards?

No, it's only the religious ceremony that's decreed null and void. The civil ceremony part of the marriage still stands as does the divorce decree in civil court. Children of an annulled marriage still benefit legally in all matters. Many people confuse the two issues -- one religious, one civil.
