MINNEAPOLIS - Employees at Target Corp. headquarters can put their casual clothes back in the closet.
The retailer told its 5,000 headquarters employees that it is ending its "business casual" dress code in favor more formal clothes for every weekday except Friday.
Beginning Sept. 7, the new rules will include a requirement that men wear a sport coat or tie if they leave their usual work area. They must wear a pressed-collar shirt and tie with any sweater. For women, sweater sets or dressy sweaters are among the acceptable options. Women must wear a jacket over any sleeveless blouses.
Violators can be sent home to change.

Heh. Have to tell my friend Rich he should have knocked off the low-cut blouses and high cut mini-skirts. When I worked there, he was generally in t-shirts and jeans. See how these things progress if you let them go?
I agree with these policies but have one gripe:
1. its expensive to purchase enough suits to wear 4 days a week. If my job doesn't pay me enough to afford it, I'm not wearing it.
Fortunately its a moot point for me :)
Mandatory sweaters? All year round? Good thing they are HQ'd in Minnesota.

I absolutely despise business casual.
Business casual is to dress codes what the mullet is to haircuts. Business up front party out back don't cut it.
Decide what you are going to be and the BE IT. Be business or be casual. Business casual fails at both.
I hate Dockers, the official pants for people with fat butts. I mean, if I can't wear jeans, I might as well look good and wear a tie.

Upscale employees, will require upscale paychecks. Target cannot and will not afford them.
There seems to be a lot of attempts at capitulating to the 'we blame the miniskirt' moralists out there.
After they see that sales to the "I hate sexy clothing" crowd does not GREATLY improve, they will be back to the see thru tops and microminis with a dental floss thong.
The extremists they are seeking to appease, never bought the "trendy clothing' to begin with, they are just upset that THEIR kids look like dorks amongst the "Urban Outfitters" and the "Abercrombie and Fitch" generation.
Capitulating to extremist regarding the "need for more conservative clothing for young women and men" won't increase their sales, because "religious extremists" won't buy the trendy stuff anyhow... they are not clients... they are professional protestors of any thing that can be considered "sexy" in public... JUST like the anti fur folks.
When miniskirts go from 14 inches above the knee to 3, the extremists, will gripe about the 3. When the skirts go to the mid calf, they will whine about the slit that exposes flesh CLEAR to the knee. And when skrits are ankle length, they will complain about the little tramps who are not wearing stockings underneath and open toed shoes.

The "Virtue Police" amonst us, want the entire general public to live according to their own peculiar inclinations Like their counterparts in Islam, this is how they tend to think.
And they always fail in a capitalist environement because their particular group of extremists never spent money on trendy clothes to begin with. So the market place will kick them and their "desire to make changes in the clothing market" to the curb, in less than a full season.
This is why Islamists and some extremist theocratic leaning types here in the USA often hate aspects of capitalism. The free market rules, NOT their version of God or morality and it drives them to protest, boycott and seek to attack via any legal means, those who do measure up to their "standards of appearance" or "behvavior."
Target is headed for the "kmart" bluelight special "dustbin of history." This is but one step in that direction... unless they think they are going to become the "new Nordstrom's" or "Sac's Fifth" with this policy change.

Target has some good buys. I have things from their that lasted better than stuff from Kauffmans.
We went to another department rather than deal with that loser.
Why anyone would hire someone like that is beyond me. He could have been in the circus.
Nothing about suits. Dockers with with a choice of an an open collar shirt and sports coat, or a buttoned collar with tie and sweater. I'd call the new policy business casual, and the old policy attire for changing oil.

This is the headquarters for Target, Mervins and Marshall Field , not one of their stores.
We have friends whose daughter works in the Target home office, and she said the home office reminded her of her visits to Cal Berkley re what so many wore to work. She is a Stanford Grad and got her MBA from one of the Mn schools.
It will be and currently IS filtering down to store department managment as a policy.

People who judge by casual vs. formal clothing deserve to be deceived.
This is stupid. There's absolutely no reason some network guy, or accounting, or back office marketing, needs to wear a suit and tie. Further, they claim in the article its more standardized, but that's BS. Women can easily exploit the policy, but men still have to wear a tie. Unless women are required to wear dresses and hose, the distinction for women's dress, especially non-professional women, between semi-formal and casual is not that great -- at least not in practice.
As an attorney, I wear a suit and tie to court, and perhaps to a client's office if that's what they wear (unusual). Nowhere else. My dress then ranges from true business casual (meaning wool slacks and at least a long sleeved dress shirt) all the way down to shorts and a t-shirt on weekends and an occassional Friday.
Business casual policies can be short, and effective: Men have to wear a button down, collared shirt, long sleeved during the week or short sleeved on Friday -- the sweater alternative must match the sleeve length. Slacks should be non-cotton during the week and dark colored, with a cotton option on Friday of any seasonal color. Leather shoes and socks/hose required during the week. Women may wear dresses or pants on Friday without hose, but during the week must wear a pants, dress, or suit outfit that is reasonably dark (blue or darker) in color. All should be well kept. Ladies: fill in here any other specific requirements you feel appropriate that goes with the spirit of this. I'm not all that familiar with ladies' clothes. (No wisecracks).
With Target's new policy, you will see guys, for example, with a tie and a short sleeved shirt in a suit that doesn't fit and isn't well made. This all looks hideous and is worse than what they were trying to get away from in the first place.
