Mike Ditka had not made up his mind ,sources tell ABC News, on whether to run for US Senate in Illinois.
Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Dennis Hastert and several top Republicans including state house GOP leader Tom Cross are expected to endorse the idea of a Ditka candidacy Wednesday night at Navy Pier.
It is unknown whether Coach Ditka will attend.
Ditka's would be opponent, Barack Obama will deliver the keynote address on Tuesday evening at the Democratic National Convention, Kerry-Edwards campaign announces.
Obama's campaign nervous about Ditka, ABC News Marc Ambinder reports.

I'm beginning to wonder if this Obama guy can win any other way besides unopposed?
Any Democrat other than Michael Jordan should be nervous about running against Ditka in Illinois.
Coach endorses coach.
Wrestling coach and former drivers ed instructor right?
Woohoooo !! ! ! !
The coach endorses Da coach !
Ditka now has all the stars aligning. From the way I've been reading these stories the last few days, I've come to the conclusion that he has decided to run but wants to get his family concerns out of the way first.
There's going to be a LOT of people let down if he let the speculation grow to fever pace and then cuts out, which is why I'm doubting he will not run.
This will be the Superbowl of Senate campaigns if Iron Mike gets in. And Obama bin Laden might want to start smoking crack again if it happens!
For those of you who don't know. Barack Obama is an extremist he makes Kerry and Edwards look like conservatives. We need Da Coach to run and win this Senate seat and keep Illinois safe from Obama.
let me know as soon as the ditka2004 web site goes up - i'll send a donation.
Obama on national TV deliverng the Democratic keynote address in prime time--rotflol!
Can't you just picture the campaign strategy sessions now? Ditka pulls out a X-O clipboard with a map of the state. "Okay team, Obama's going to be campaigning here, here, and here. We need to flank him out here, here, and here. You, get out to the Quad Cities. You, out to Waukegan. You, get to downstate. One, two, three, BREAK!"
The polling on his running against Obama must be real positive. We may just pick up a seat we had written off.!
I miss Ditka's media interviews after football games. Gum-snapping snarl and all.
yes he was a former wrestling coach and drivers ed instructor.
When he coached Da Saints, I met him at his New Orleans' restuarant a few times and he was unbelievably gracious. He often was willing to do more than simply exchange pleasantries with his customers.
He's going to be a great Senator and I might move to Illinois, just so I can vote for him. Although, in Illinois it may not matter.
Clint, Arnold, Ditka...why are the GOP's celebrity candidates much cooler than the Dems?
A Ditka run will cause some serious consternation for the Democrats. What had appeared to be an easy win for them in a heavily Democratic state would suddenly be a major challenge. If the Democrats concede defeat and spend the campaign money elsewhere (such as Florida), then Ditka's popularity could spill over into the Presidential race. The image of Bush tossing the football around with Ditka could boost his numbers and force Kerry to spend time and money that would otherwise be spent in Pennsylvania or New Mexico.
Because of Schwarzeneggar, Kerry will have to defend California; now he might have to defend Illinois as well.
