Good luck, Kevin. Be sure to remind Mfume that the only black to be elected to a major statewide office in Maryland is conservative Republican Lt. Gov. Michael Steele. I'm still hoping that Sarbanes retires in 2006 and that Steele runs for the Senate---hopefully against Mfume, who supposedly is interested in running. Steele would win with 60% of the vote!
You're from Baltimore, right? What congressional district do you live in? While the 59% black 7th CD (Mfume's old district) is ridiculously Democrat (Bush was held to 24.4% in 2000), there are two other districts that take in part of the city and that are less Democrat than the state as a whole: Ruppersberger's 2nd CD (which includes a small piece of Baltimore City and large parts of Baltco and Harford and Ann Arundel Counties) and Cardin's 3rd CD (larger pieces of Baltimore City and other parts of Baltco and Ann Arundel Counties). In 2000, Bush got 40.5% in the 27% black 2nd CD and 41.2% in the 16% black 3rd CD, but Ehrlich-Steele did a lot better in 2002 (in fact, I think they carried both districts) and a strong conservative with local roots such as yourself could send Ruppersberger or Cardin packing. Just something for you to consider for 2006, when Ehrlich runs for reelection and hopefully Steele runs for an open U.S. Senate seat.

Bring up Clarence Thomas, Condoleezza Rice, and Colin Powell as often as you can, and ask him why they are not perfect black role models for today's youth (both black and white youth).
Ask him if he thinks he would be a better role model than any of those three and why. Then hit him with their credentials.

I read an article some time ago wherein I seem to recall LBJ was quoted as cynically (but accurately) prophesying that the black vote would be the Democrat's for decades once the civil rights legislation and the whole socialistic so-called "war on poverty" was passed.
The irony to me is that the legislation for civil rights would never have been passed without strong Republican support.
I hope those decades are over!

NAALCP is not about helping blacks to achieve and prosper in the greatest country in history. It is about the poverty pimps keeping the average black person in self-imposed shackles of hopelessness, and thereby getting a load of cash for creating problems where none would exist otherwise. If they were truly about "advancing colored people" they would hold up all successful black people as beacons of inspiration.
