'NY Times' Mag Editor May Have Broken Political Gift Ban

By Joe Strupp

Published: July 12, 2004

NEW YORK An editor at The New York Times Magazine may have violated the newspaper's highly-publicized ban on political campaign contributions with a $1,000 donation to John Kerry's presidential campaign, according to Federal Election Commission records.

Times spokeswoman Catherine Mathis confirmed that the newspaper was looking into the contribution by Elizabeth Stewart, a fashion editor for the Times Magazine, who made the donation on May 20, according to campaign records listed at the PoliticalMoneyLine Web site.

"Right now we are checking," Mathis told E&P. "We would certainly tell the employee this is in violation of the policy, but we never discuss disciplinary action."

Stewart, who is based in Los Angeles, could not be reached for comment Monday. A review of campaign records indicated three other Times employees also had given to the Kerry campaign this year, but none are in the editorial department.

"The policy does not apply to non-newsroom employees," Mathis said.

How frickin' emotional! Stupid editor risks her job to donate to a candidate. I'm sure she ran to the mailbox to save her Johnny.

Especially the yellow and orange bicycle suit.

Disciplinary action, Doug from Upland's butt. She's going to get enough of a raise to cover the contribution.

Well, after all a fashion editor is not in charge of editorial page with political opinions in it, does not even contribute to that department, and would have a hard time influencing the newspaper's position. Thus harm (if any) is minimal. Besides, I could bet dollars to donuts that NYT is going to endorse kerry anyway.

Ever read a movie review that suddenly turns and attacks Bush? I've seen a few, long before Moore's most recent steaming turd. Wanna bet that there are veiled anti-Bush innuendos in her fashion columns?

I just imagined this hysterical double-bagger running down the street after the mailman, sobbing and wailing, praying to Gaia that her precious thousand bucks would make it to Johnny in time.

It makes me laugh. 'Rats are pathetic.

"Ever read a movie review...?"
I neither read movie reviews nor watch movies (for some 30+ yrs now).
To these salubrious habits I attribute both the savings from not buying the tickets and my having (relatively) unlittered mind from not reading the garbage.
Besides, why should I support contemporary mass culture and everything (mostly bad) it stands for? Michael Moore could make a bundle from his latest flick, but there is not a cent of mine in his pile.

Yeah. When Mark Twain advised his readers never to pick a fight with someone who buys ink by the barrel, he wasn't figuring on folks who buy air-time by the year. Pass the popcorn, please.

I'm with you, pal. You've done even better than me -- I paid to see a movie as recently as 1988, but never again. Might just as well write out a check to the Democratic National Committee.

This is the Times we're talking about -- they put left-wing political content in everything, including baseball articles and food columns!
