I remember the April 29, 1992 L.A. riots distinctly as I was living in Redlands at the time.

These stick out very clearly to me after 12 years in passing:

- Whites were hunted in parts of L.A. for acts of physical vengence in the acquittal of the police officers who beat Rodney King (one got it real bad - a brick to the side of the head - with hundreds of onlookers cheering on the act).

- The riots were isolated mainly to L.A. One black broke into a Target store in San Bernardino and was shot dead coming out of the store carrying a television. Word spread quick.

- The Koreans in L.A. were the only group of property owners largely unscathed by the rioting, looting mobs. REASON: Koreans armed themselves with shotguns, Uzis, and various other armaments and climbed onto the roofs of their businesses and homes. They shot several rioters and looters dead and were acquitted for defending their lives and property. Word spread quick.

Have a happy.

I was not in the area, but have heard that even the UCLA campus was evacuated during the
1992 riots.

And sadly I don't know they're names, but a couple of South-Central folks saw some of
the brutalizing of whites on TV. One of them was sickened by the cruely and
said something like "We are Christians and we've got to try to stop this".
I can't remember if they rescued Denny or some other brutalized soul, but
I did remember that as one bright light in the sad events.

The Christian brothers who saw Denny being murdered on national television did indeed rush out to save him. Indeed, he would have been murdered had it not been for them. The were Black.

God recognizes only one color - the Blood of His Son, The Lord Jesus Christ.

Rodney King led law enforcement on a chase at speeds estimated at up to 110 to 115 mph

I hope the rest of the reporting is more accurate than this statement. Rodney was driving a Yugo that would have been in trouble at anything over about 90. Although the media published the 110 to 115 quote, primarily for the purpose of creating a strawman that they could proceed to knock down, the actual report from officers Singer and Singer indicated Rodney's speed when overtaken was approximately 85.

The 110 figure comes from the narrative in their report in which they indicate that they pulled off the freeway onto an off/on ramp to let Rodney go by, then accelerated to catch him. In order to make up the difference between his speed and the zero mph start that they made, they accelerated to approx. 110 mph.

That's what the report said, and that's what the testimony at trial was. Rodney wasn't going 110, the CHP unit trying to catch up with him was.

This issue particularly irritates me because it bears a strong resemblance to the "Bush said there was an imminent threat" claim that the Demos have been making. He never said it, they know he never said it, but by getting people to believe he said it they then have something to attack him for. The "110 mph" claim was the Times equivalent of the "imminent threat" canard.

A long time ago I read that the gun sales in LA jumped to 400,000 in the year following the riots. Most of the sales were to Watts area residents.

Well, if the natives burn their own neighborhoods down, I have to wonder who has insurance and how the insurer spread the liability out?

Riots: good or bad for John Kerry?

I think they would be bad, unless he came out strongly against them and urged support for the police (which he won't do).

Phil Hendries was telling his audience to shoot the bastards if they try to pull you out of your car. Boy, did that generate some phone calls!

Two Korean men stand on the roof of a grocery store with rifles to prevent looters from entering the store, April 30, 1992, in Los Angeles.
