Defense of Marriage Amendment debate on CSPAN2 LIVE THREAD

Limitation of government power. Enhancement of individual liberty.
Concepts that appear to carry little weight with you.

My apologies for taking a while to reply, I had to leave yesterday, and am only now able to respond.

Both of these concepts have very deep resonances for me, however, unless they are grossly misunderstood they are not in play here. In what sense is liberty (here I mean real liberty, not licence) being limited by this? Furthermore, it actually consists of a limitation of government power, it limits the government in its definition of marriage.

Also here is a email I just received from Bill Frist:

On Friday, the Senate began debating a constitutional amendment to protect marriage as the union of a man and a woman. I expect we'll have a vote on Wednesday morning.

Many Americans are surprised that we need to have this debate at all. Over and against 5,000 years of recorded human experience, activist judges in Massachusetts have overturned marriage as a covenant between husband and wife. And liberal and conservative legal scholars agree that unless the Congress acts to protect marriage, same-sex marriage will be extended nationwide.

Children do best with mothers and fathers. We're fooling ourselves if we think children will be held harmless by destroying marriage as the union of a husband and a wife. Marriage and family are the bedrock of society.

The question is no longer whether the Constitution will be amended. The question is only how it will be amended and by whom -- activist judges or the people.

My vote is with the people.

What happens when a man leaves his wife and kids for another woman?

I think the question is whether there is any difference whether a man goes to another man or a woman to another woman to the children. Yes, I believe there is. It's bad because it show adultery to the children, but man to man may be worse because their is no woman to civilize the man. There is a higher chance of Sodomy.

Woman to Woman has worse problems too, but they are more subtle. The mother factor may be confused as well as marriage between a man and a woman not being promoted.

In both cases, the children of such are much less likely to marry in the future. This is proven in Scandinavia where more than 60% of children are not in married families. In these countries child abuse has increased dramatically.

In any case, the thing to remember here is this is about children. The Lord said that if you mislead, one of these little ones, it would be better to have a millstone around your neck and be thrown into the sea. Marriage is one of God's first institutions. It's like social security, mess with it and society and kids start dying.
