More than 90 people were ticketed and fined for trying to use someone else's disability placard to get a closer parking space at the NASCAR Tropicana 400 over the weekend, officials said.
Thirty-nine drivers were ticketed Sunday at the Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, adding to the 52 drivers cited Saturday, state officials said. Each citation carries a possible $100 fine and a mandatory court appearance, they said.
"There were plenty of opportunities to turn away," Secretary of State Police Sgt. Theresa Kazimour said of those ticketed.
The secretary of state's office started the crackdown after receiving complaints that able-bodied drivers were using disability placards fraudulently to gain entry, said Bill Bogdan, disability liaison for the secretary of state's department of senior and community services.

Great I see so many people using these tag when they don't need it. With my leg I was offer a tag but I can walk across a large parking lot. When I go to the mall I see the kids of the grandparent using their cars and parking in the spots.
It really frosts me when I see people that you KNOW aren't handicapped taking advantage of the system...
There's always rationalizations which Me-ocrats use to justify their bad behaviors:
Or "I'll do it before someone else does it".
I'm glad to see that people are cracking down. I've used my placard for wboud 25 years now(!) and it frosts me that some people think that they can abuse the system. BTW: I don't LOOK handicapped, but I cannot stand for more than a few minutes before shooting pains cause me much pain.
of course, once people see me in the midst of an attack, there is no question...
Does anybody even think twice about using the handicapped stall in the bathroom?
If you walk at a fast pace to the door of the mall, you are OK.
Get out of the car and run to the casino in hopes of catching up to Mom before she drops the first $20 into the slot machine. LOL
Don't know how it is in your state but in New Mexico, the application myust be signed by a licensed doctor and they myst provide their license number. Many handicaps are not visable and the call is the doctor's not some passive observer's.
BTW in New Mexico, the tags are issued to the handicapped person directly and a police officer may ask to see the Tag, the issue certificate, and picture ID. If those don't match up the tags can be confiscated on the spot and a citation issued.
System is not perfect but it works if the cops do their jobs.

I agree, but be careful what you "know".
My wife is temporarily wheelchair-bound due to a broken ankle. If I'm dropping her off / picking her up somewhere, you might see me returning to / arriving in my car, parking in a HC space for wheelchair access. I will appear completely able-bodied when doing this.
I just always assumed that is someone getting out of a car in a handicapped space was not physically handicapped, then they must be mentally handicapped.
Good! Between the police action and bad karma, the guilty may need a placard for real sooner rather than later.
Just this weekend, I saw a scene unfold. Went shopping with the family to a Super Target where they have ample, sizable handicapped spots. It was raining very hard. We were walking in under umbrella. A car full of young people pull up and park in the handicap spot and jump out and run on the store.
Boy did I want to go over and take a leak in the drivers seat. If only the door not been locked.. :)
Some of the HC plates are issued to the person rather than the vehicle. In Moms case, she doesn't own a car, but relies on her children to take her to the store. She puts the HC sign on the mirror of the car she is riding in.
Pee into the vent in front of the window. The smell will come right through the air conditioner.
AS a person confined to a wheelchair with a lifelong disability, there is nothing that makes me more angry than the abusers of Handicapped Parking.
I wish the states would do away with HP all together until a better solution can be found.
Think it is bad in Chicago? Come down to Florida, where every person above 50 has a placard.
P. S. The smell of the car will have a wang to it.
