ALBUQUERQUE Counting on his liberal base to stick by him, Sen. John F. Kerry plans to aggressively court more conservative voters with a message that emphasizes traditional values of service, faith and family.
Following his pick last week of a running mate with potential appeal to rural communities, the presumed Democratic presidential nominee said he was not content to target the narrow band of swing voters that the two parties were expected to fight over in roughly 20 swing states.
"I'm going to talk to people on the right," Kerry told The Times on Friday during a joint interview with his vice presidential pick, Sen. John Edwards. "I want to talk to conservatives."
As for rank-and-file party members, Kerry said his record of strong support for environmental protection, gun control and abortion rights all core Democratic issues "speaks for itself about my priorities in policy terms."
Indeed, Kerry seemed unconcerned about antagonizing his liberal supporters.
"I'm a hunter. I'm a gun owner. A lot of people on the left don't like that, but that's who I am," he said.
The Massachusetts senator has already begun his effort to broaden his political reach. During a recent swing through the Midwest, where he tramped around farms and toted a shotgun on a trap-shooting range, Kerry said that he represented "conservative values," and emphasized his personal opposition to abortion.

Seriously though, while I have problems with Bush, they are no where near the issues I would have with Kerry or any of the other pond scum that compromises those who support Kerry.
He's looking for a real hard core hand slapping isn't he!
"I'm a hunter. I'm a gun owner."
And once I've gotten power, I (and Dianne Feinstein) will decide what we hunters and gun owners need as legitimate weaponry. Your handguns... Mr. and Mrs. America, turn them in.

Many quite rational conservatives will welcome the day when such a blatant attempt is made to infringe on our RKBA's.
It will have unintended consequences..
Many GOP FReepers disagree, and think it is better to back the Rino compromises on gun prohibitions. -- I say we should have it out, the sooner the better.
Words fail me...even Jane Fonda wouldn't have been so ignorant!
What no patience for dribble? ; )
I agree wholeheartedly!
This is a joke, right?
If Kerry is a "Born-Again" gun owner, then he should attempt to repent for all the gun control laws he supported.
Hard to say what he is hunting but I would guess he isn't killing much. But it sounds like a good plan if you are a faker and don't want to shoot and clean anything. Well that is except your clothes.
He has already reached out enough ....he needs to keep his hands to himself
Welcome to the "laughters anonymous" club!
We are always more than happy to lay the red carpet out for new members! : )
I think what he means is that he wants to lie to conservatives, trusting that we are as stupid as the drooling sycophants whose support he is so confidnet of. Think again RAT boy! We're conservatives because we use the brain God gave us instead of believing everything we hear.
Kerry is a politician with a wind burned finger, who is grasping for as many votes as he can through desperation, and is attempting to wear a mask for the election for he knows that his true face is NOT going to place him in the White House.
When Democrats set out to fool people, they often succeed. Their long track record of winning elections they should lose attests to this.
While Kerry's attempts to pass himself off as a regular Middle American are ludicrous, they are not to be laughed off. They must be countered. Many people are easily fooled, and many others wish to be fooled, by a Democrat. They WANT to believe that the Democrats have nominated a centrist, and only we can tell them it's a crock.
Hey, Kerry, I have a message for you. It is the same message that Dick Cheney gave to scumbag Leahy.
Yeah, right into our wallets.
No doubt with his well used left hand.
Nooooo.....clowns are SCARY!
~</;o)
Yea, he's hunting for votes and if he doesn't achieve his goal, the gun is meant for him.
