Why would bringing it out pre-election backfire?
If the timing seems "too convinient" then the information would, in the view of some, to fall prey to the conspiratorialists. Also remember how the last minute LATimes accusations against Schwartzenegger garnered him more votes than it lost him.
I am open to other interpretations of Loftus's comment as well.
