Outbreak Sickens 34 in Western Pennsylvania (Salmonella Poisoning - July 14th)

The Associated Press Published: Jul 14, 2004 PITTSBURGH (AP) - At least 34 cases of salmonella poisoning from a strain of the bacteria often found on fresh produce have been reported in western Pennsylvania since late last week, health officials said.

Investigators trying to track down the source of the outbreak are interviewing the victims about what and where they ate in recent days. Richard McGarvey, spokesman for the state Health Department, said the infections were all caused by the same type of salmonella bacteria. But he said it is too early to connect the outbreak to a specific food supplier or other outlet.

Salmonella bacteria can contaminate food or water, and those who get it generally suffer from diarrhea, fever and cramps for up to three days. It can be fatal in rare cases. The 34 cases were reported by doctors or hospitals in at least four counties.
