Kerry camp on the defensive after celebrities bash Bush

Monitors showed Kerry, the presumed Democratic presidential nominee, laughing through much of the concert. Afterward, he told the audience that the performers "conveyed the heart and soul of our country." His only quibble was with Goldberg's repeated references to Edwards as "Kid." Kerry said his 51-year-old running mate, who is nine years his junior, is "a man."

Yesterday, Kerry touted his campaign's positive cast, telling a crowd at another fund-raiser, "John and I didn't run one negative ad against each other or any of our opponents all through the primaries and we haven't done a negative ad against George Bush, because we think Americans want real solutions for real problems."

The Radio City event prompted a sharp rebuke from the Bush-Cheney reelection committee, which noted that Kerry attended the concert despite saying earlier on CNN's "Larry King Live" that he had not had enough time to get an intelligence briefing. The administration warned Thursday of Al Qaeda plans to attack the United States and offered to brief Kerry. Kerry's campaign said he has scheduled the briefing for Sunday.

"It is a great example of John Kerry's priorities that on the day he said he did not have time to receive his intelligence briefing on threats to America, he found time to attend a Hollywood fund-raiser, filled with enough hate and vitriol to make Michael Moore blush," Bush-Cheney campaign spokesman Steve Schmidt said.

Later, during a conference call with reporters, Tad Devine, a top Kerry communications strategist, grew animated when asked whether the campaign would release a tape of the event, as the Bush-Cheney committee requested. Doing so might violate copyrights and licensing agreements for the entertainers who performed -- and allow the Bush campaign to use the tape in commercials against Kerry and Edwards, a campaign aide said.

"The hypocrisy of them making a call like that is almost unimaginable," said Devine, adding that Bush and Cheney restrict access to their own campaign events. (In fact, the administration's practice is to let reporters into all fund-raisers except those in private residences. While reporters were invited to the Kerry concert, they were forbidden from recording.)

I would imagine they encountered a bit of difficulty finding an OB/GYN who would care for Mrs. Edwards' during her pregnancies.

Excellent observation, considering the risk.

Surely the story of a mother who lost a child but had two others so late in her life will come out between now and November 2.

I'm treading lightly here because, in interest of full disclosure, my wife of 13 years and I have a 4 year old. I am the same age as Edwards and my wife is 11 years my junior.

That may be driving my curiosity which, we all know, killed the cat.

Yes, they don't want America to see their version of American values.

Oh, I hope they keep this kind of thing up.

They may as well wrap up the election in pretty paper and hand it to Bush if they keep up with things like this.

Works for me.

Did your article state how old they were when they got married? This seems a little unusual, to say the least.

Where are all the howls about their first amendment rights to report EVERYTHING, even if it jeopardizes national security?

I heard she was five years his senior. The age of the two little ones make it evident that they took a risk of Down's Syndrome by having babies when she was in her late 40s and early 50s. It could be that the little ones are adopted. But, you gotta admit; the two little ones are cuties.

Oh no. My heart goes out to any parent who loses a child. Hopefully they will not exploit the death of their son for political purposes. But then, I guess they would.

They're not adopted. See ThreePuttinDude's post #24.

You're right, they are cuties. Yet I have this feeling Mrs. Edwards wouldn't want those little ones to view a video of their father's recent fundraiser.

They had two older children. Their 16 year old was killed in an auto accident in 1996.

She decided to have more children, and was able to conceive through the use of fertility drugs.

She had the kids when she was 48 and 50.

I have four friends in their mid 40's who all had babies last year. None of them had to use fertility drugs, but I don't see why having kids this late is an issue.

Mara Eliason(sp) on the Fox news panel just had her second and she's near 50.

My husband who is almost 50 was born when his mother was over 40. My grandmother had 13 kids, her first when she was late teens and then her last when she was mid 40's.

Why is the fact that she had her kids late in life an issue?

By the way, the fact that he does have kids and sat through the "filthy show", IMHO, is an issue. Poor example, etc.

The premise of this article: that the Kerry camp is,or ever would be "on the defensive" about poisonous campaign rhetoric,is just plain silly.

No matter how bad the utterances were, they pale to insignificance beside the TRULY vicious stuff put on the net by people who believe Michael Moore is their very own avenging angel.

If you think the Kerry campaign does NOT do a little dance of joy every time it sees one of these attacks-no matter how crude, crass,or illiterate.........

Mrs. Edwards admits to having used fertility drugs to conceive her last two children. A woman who is in her late 40's, early 50s is probably also using donated eggs to conceive, and then relies on major hormone treatment throughout the pregnancy.

This is high risk and very costly.

Maybe he's a robot planted by the NVA.

The Manchurian candidate?

Interesting that a new version of that film, starring Denzel Washington I believe, has just been released. How appropriate!

I'll add to the cynicism. By '98, Edwards was planning to run for president. What better way to emulate "Camelot" than to have a "young family"?

Good point.
How in the hell did a post-menopausal woman give birth to two children?

"Teresa Heinz Kerry, told reporters...that "some of the words were ones I would not have used."

Even Ter-ray-za, that notorious loose cannon wouldn't use the language Whoopie, et al, used! This whole sorry episode reminds me of my favorite freeper tagline: I cried because I had no shoes, until I met a man who had no class.

Great post kattracks, I can barely believe this was in the Boston Globe. It really shows Kerry & Co. for the classless, clueless, fools they are.

I want to know what Kerry and The Kid promised these scum in exchange for their money.
And I'll bet it's on that tape.
And if Ben Affleck is so upset about his increased net income, he has two choices - he can give it back or save it because his career is effectively over.
