Very few lawyers do any significant pro bono work. Pro bono is something for movies and television lawyers. Sometimes they write off bad debts and call it charity--If you want to know which lawyer does real charity work in your community, you'd have to research the charities themselves and see who is on retainer. Those are often the genuine probonos--but they manage to collect a fee here and there, too.

As for civil rights litigations, many people are unaware that when the ACLU wins a case, they collect "reasonable and customary" fees from the loser. It's written into statute somewhere. The ACLU likes to pretend that the lawyers it HIRES work for free. Of course, when the defendant wins, that defendant gets no money. Great racket?
