Greg Summers (aka Sultan88) paased away this morning in a Petersburg, Virginia hospital. He's been sick for some time, but this news came as a total shock to me.
Greg was a kind, gentle man, who had a passion for all things that make America great...I am honored to consider him a good FRiend and he will be greatly missed by myself and all those who got to know his wisdom and sense of humor on FR.com. This is simply devastating news!!
My prayers go out to his family, including his son who we've come to know as 'yankhater" around here.

"Gregory R. Summers, 56, of Petersburg, died Thursday, July 8, 2004 at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg." I'm not sure of his actual birthday, but I think his son can help out with that and the permission to post this tribute on the FReeper Wall of Fame.
Thanks again, Mr. Hoffa...MUD

Thanks Jean, I just got back from the wake a few minutes ago. I met Greg's son Mark (aka yankhater) and he's quite the impressive young gentleman. Then I was introduced to Gloria, Greg's wife, and she said she has read the first 150 posts of this thread and is very touched at all the lovely prayers and wishes and rememberances from so many wonderful FReepers!! I told her that they were heartfelt and Sultan's humor and sage wisdom will be sorely missed around here.
Yankhater also said he plans to increase his FReepin' activites so that Sultan's legacy will live on!!

"FR has lost a Southern gentleman." We did indeed...although Greg was a native of Troy, PA, he'd adopted the South as his own.

Sultan's humor and sage wisdom will be sorely missed around here Very much so!
Thanks Mud, for the update
If there wasn't an ocean interfering, I would dearly love to attend Greg's funeral service.
I know Greg will understand though.

"I would dearly love to attend Greg's funeral service." I'll be there and report back what I can...Greg's wife was touched when I told her about the young Irish lass who's been crying at the loss of her FRiend. She said she already read the thread thru 150, but I was thinking about printing out the whole thread and putting it in a nice binder as a gift from us FReepers.

I'm so glad Mrs. Sultan has been reading the thread and knows our thoughts and prayers are with her and the family.
Printing this thread for them is a wonderful idea, Mud. I think I'll print one to keep as a remembrance of a grand FReeper.

unspun: "Thank you for sharing your heart's sentiments cb88 and if I may say so, thank you for your friendship to Greg and to so many brothers and sisters, including myself. As some know, Greg was in "Free Republic Federalist League Baseball" with a few of us: "FRFLB!!" to the unintroduced, it may seem trite to say he was special, but he was a special buddy of mine, for the brief times we spent in fantasy baseball as well as FReeper cavorting. One got to know that he was (is!) special, just by being there and being himself. God bless you, Summers family (Hi, yankhater!:-) I was fourteen when my father was brought to where he could be face to face with our loving Savior God. I can share with you a special gratefulness for having a wonderful father. Greg loves you now more than ever -- he has even more capacity to. Personally, I hope he and Ernie Williams get to meet soon. Soon, I'll be very happy to introduce you. Love, Arlen" 545 posted on 07/09/2004 11:58:44 PM EDT by unspun

I would be most honored to have his name on the remembrance board.
His dates are 1948-2004
Special thanks to Mudboy. I was honored to meet you tonight. My father considered you to be a dear friend and compatriot. I will be honored to continue his legacy here as best as I can.
