I just listened to Kerry's and Edwards' speeches in Cleveland.
Kerry was his usual boring self. Edwards' speech was his usual populist appeal. I had not actually listened to a speech by Edwards before, and I must say, I was surprised at how banal and unpersuasive he sounded. All this reputation for being a silver-tongued devil in the courtroom in front of twelve people does not transpose well onto a podium in front of a crowd.
He sounded "hot" in the McLuhanesque sense, like Nixon did. It reminded me of how poorly he did in the primaries, against a really pathetic field of competitors.
Maybe he can persuade people to vote for him 12 at a time, but he will need a lot more than 4 months time before the election at that rate.
Perhaps he was having a bad day, but if his "coming out speech" was any guide, I don't think John-Boy is going to save Kerry.
