FLORENCE, ORE. - U.S. Department of Wildlife officials ended up shooting and killing three deer following several near misses and one collision at an Oregon coast airport. The three deer were killed last week at the Florence Municipal Airport.
They were part of a small herd that made itself at home along the Airport's runway.
Over the past year, whenever an airplane made a landing, the deer would dart across the runway and head for the forest.
Collisions between airplanes and animals can be dangerous.
Back in 2002, a chartered Lear jet collided with an elk as the plane was trying to take off from the Astoria Airport.
Although everyone on board survived the crash, the jet did end up skidding off the runway and exploding into flames.
The Florence Airport hopes to avoid a similar instance by constructing a fence to keep deer away from the runway, but it will not be finished until next year.

My pet peeve. I hate this term. If you aim to hit and miss, it is a miss, or a near hit, not a "near miss".
A "near miss" is if you aim to miss and hit.
Probably the snow level was a lot higher when the deer was out prancing and jumping around?
Or, it was an audition for Santa's Team that went awry...
Florence, Oregon. You mean there's somebody besides you and me that knows that place exists?
What has happened to that town, that the folks hire a government agent to shoot some deer? I can see maybe considering (once) getting some help dispatching a beached whale or something like that, but shooting deer? Actually I'm sort of surprised they managed to take them out without damaging something. The old timers must have made them leave the dynamite at home.
Back in the day, I'd have done it for free.
SQ what you think? Are they really getting better or did they just luck out this time?

There was a website that had photos of strange on the job accidents. The photos of the deer were included. It seems the deer was hit by a train. The photographer is standing on the railroad embankment. That also explains why the deer's feet are gone. The train sheared then between the track.
